FR 296 Dispersed — Coconino NF

Description

FR 296 runs through open ponderosa-pine and high-desert terrain in the Coconino National Forest south of Flagstaff, tracing the edge of the Lower Lake Mary basin at roughly 6,700 feet. Numerous flat pullouts line the road over several miles, sized for everything from tents to large rigs, with elk frequently moving through the area at dusk. A barbed-wire fence now limits access to the old established sites along the main corridor, but usable roadside spots remain — a forested spur via FR 296A offers more tree cover and solitude. The dirt road can develop deep ruts and mud after rain, so high-clearance is wise in wet conditions.
