Peaceful well-kept campground perfect for an escape from the summer heat

The campground was a pleasant surprise, but we were very disappointed with nearby opportunities for active recreation.   The lake is covered in thick green sludge, a seasonal algal bloom that discourages swimming or even kayaking.  The "Luna Lake Trails" are heavily used ATV roads, of limited interest to mount bikers and wholly unsuitable for hiking.

Peaceful and beautiful sunsets

We love this campground because it is a little out of the way so there are usually spaces.  The spaces are large and nestled in a pine forest near the lake.  Clean restrooms and water available.   You can walk to the lake.  A nice place to kayak, bird watch and the sunsets are amazing.  The town of Alpine is small but there is a little store with food and camping items, a couple of restaurants and a nice bar.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make reservations for Luna Lake Campground in Arizona?

Luna Lake Campground typically operates on a first-come, first-served basis, which means reservations may not be available. The campground's somewhat remote location often means spaces are available even during peak seasons. For the most current reservation information and policies, contact the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest office directly. Be prepared with alternative camping options in case the campground is full upon arrival.

What fishing opportunities are available at Luna Lake in Arizona?

Fishing at Luna Lake can be seasonal due to environmental factors. The lake experiences algal blooms during warmer months that can limit fishing activities and water recreation. When conditions are favorable, the lake provides opportunities for anglers, though specific fish species aren't detailed. The lake's accessibility from the campground makes it convenient for morning or evening fishing sessions. For current fishing conditions, fishing licenses, and regulations, check with the Arizona Game and Fish Department before your trip.

What do visitor reviews say about camping at Luna Lake Campground?

Luna Lake Campground offers spacious sites within a beautiful pine forest setting. The campground provides clean restrooms and water access, with convenient proximity to the lake. It's generally less crowded due to its somewhat remote location. The sunsets over the lake are spectacular, and the area offers good opportunities for kayaking and bird watching. While the natural setting is peaceful, some visitors note limitations in recreational activities, particularly when seasonal algal blooms affect the lake. The surrounding ATV trails may not satisfy hikers looking for dedicated hiking paths.

What does the map of Luna Lake Campground show about site locations and amenities?

Luna Lake Campground's map shows spacious sites nestled within a pine forest setting near the lake. The campground layout features sites distributed throughout the wooded area, with amenities including clean restrooms and water spigots. Site 40 is notably positioned next to a bathroom and dumpster. The campground's design allows for easy lake access via walking paths. While specific trail connections may not be marked on the map, the area connects to several ATV roads that serve as trails in the vicinity.
