Little Nelchina State Rec Area

Little Nelchina State Recreation Site is located along the Little Nelchina River in south-central Alaska. The recreation site is accessible from the Glenn Highway (Highway 1). The area offers beautiful mountain views and riverfront access. The access road may be unpaved in sections, so vehicles with decent clearance are recommended, especially during or after wet weather. Look for signage directing you to the recreation site from the highway, as it might not be prominently marked.

The Nelchina Public Use Area requires campers to practice proper bear safety, including using bear-resistant containers and keeping all food outside of tents. Camping is typically primitive with limited facilities. Visitors should follow standard leave-no-trace principles, properly dispose of waste, and be aware that wildlife is abundant in the area. For current permit requirements, camping duration limits, and seasonal restrictions, check with Alaska State Parks or the local ranger station before your trip, as regulations may change seasonally.

Little Nelchina State Recreation Site offers several outdoor activities centered around its pristine natural setting. Visitors can enjoy camping, fishing in the Little Nelchina River, hiking in the surrounding area, and wildlife viewing - bear tracks and other wildlife signs are commonly spotted. The site serves as an excellent base camp for river trips down the Nelchina River. Photography opportunities abound with amazing mountain views. Campfires are permitted in designated areas, making it a perfect spot for evening relaxation while taking in the Alaskan wilderness.
