Nine bridges cross the gorge trail at Fillmore Glen State Park, and that trail alone draws enough day visitors to make summer weekends noticeably crowded at the adjoining campground. Set along a creek in Moravia, New York, this state park campground runs from early May through early October and gives campers direct access to one of the more distinctive gorge hiking systems in the Finger Lakes region, along with a spring-fed natural swimming area.
The campground itself has two distinct characters depending on where you pitch. Sites around the perimeter tend to have more defined boundaries and tree cover, while the middle section opens into a grassy field with no clear separation between neighbors. Tara S. notes the sites were "very close together," and road noise carries through the night on the busier loops. Tent campers have flagged that RV groups can run loud. The sites closest to the creek, across from the road, offer more distance from traffic noise, though shade is thinner there.
Bathrooms are described consistently as clean, particularly in the mornings. Showers are free and well-maintained. The campground has a playground, picnic shelters, full hookups for RVs up to 50 feet, and a dump station. The natural swimming pool is a draw for families, though it operates only when lifeguards are on duty and has been closed on multiple documented visits due to weather or staffing. The village of Moravia sits within easy walking distance and has basic resupply options.
Reservations are strongly recommended for summer weekends. Weekday rates run lower, and the campground is noticeably quieter midweek. Campers who want to hike the gorge trail without the crowds should plan for early morning starts, since the trail fills up independently of the campground. Owasco Lake, a short drive away, provides additional water access for paddlers. Campers who want more site privacy may find campsites near Fillmore Glen State Park worth comparing before booking.
This campground works best for families with kids, RV travelers needing full hookups, and hikers who want to base camp directly at the gorge trailhead, though those who prioritize site separation and quiet should plan their timing carefully.
