Reservations are available and recommended at Old Prairie Campground, one of three distinct loops inside Myakka River State Park, where nightly rates run $26 to $70. The loop holds roughly 20 sites, sites 27 through 48, and skews toward smaller rigs, vans, and tents. RVs up to 30 feet can fit some sites, though reviewers note the layout was not built with large rigs in mind. Electric and water hookups are available, but there are no sewer connections at individual sites. A dump station serves the campground. Showers, toilets, laundry facilities, and a garbage dumpster are on-site.
Sites sit close together with simple fencing between them and limited privacy screening. Cell coverage is reported as generally workable, though some carriers perform better than others. The campground has a host on site. One recurring note from recent visitors: as of late 2024, the park's water system has been non-functional for an extended period due to drought and hurricane impacts, with free jug water provided at the entrance. Boat tours have also been suspended, and the bird walk boardwalk remains closed from storm damage.
Wildlife activity around the campground is consistent and well-documented. Alligators are frequently visible along the river and lake edges, and reviewers report deer, wild hogs, black vultures, turkeys, and a wide variety of birds. Kathy L. describes the wider park landscape as feeling "like the Serengeti, wide open prairie with occasional trees." Hiking, biking, and paddling are the main activities, though trail access requires leaving the campground loop. Old Prairie tends to suit campers who want a more rustic state park experience compared to the newer Palmetto Ridge Campground across the road, and who don't need sewer hookups or space for oversized rigs.
Description
The park features three campgrounds with 90 campsites. Each site is equipped with 50-amp electrical service, water, a fire ring and picnic table. The sites in Palmetto Ridge also have sewer hook-ups. A dump station is located near Old Prairie Campground. Laundry facilities are available to all campers in Old Prairie and Palmetto Ridge campgrounds. All campsites are located within 40 yards of restroom facilities with hot showers. Sites in Old Prairie and Big Flats are dirt-based. Old Prairie and Big Flats do not have vegetation buffers. Old Prairie and Palmetto Ridge campgrounds are located near the State Road 72 park entrance, the Myakka River, the campfire circle, a small playground and Myakka Friends Gift Shop. Well-behaved pets are welcome in these three campgrounds, up to four per site.
