Reservations at $30 per night are strongly recommended for Kelsey Creek Campground, particularly for summer weekends when the park fills quickly. One reviewer noted they grabbed what appeared to be the last available spot on a Friday, and crowd patterns suggest that sites along the water's edge go first. Campers arriving via CA-175 should be warned: the winding mountain road has left more than one visitor nauseous by the time they reached camp. The campground sits within campgrounds around Clear Lake State Park, one of four distinct camping areas in the park, alongside Cole Creek Campground, Lower Bayview Campground, and Upper Bayview Campground.
Sites vary considerably in character. Some sit at the water's edge with open views of Clear Lake, while others are positioned along Kelsey Creek or on higher ground with lake views from a distance. Tree cover is a meaningful factor here, especially in summer when temperatures can hit triple digits. Sites are paved and generally level, though privacy between neighbors is limited. No electrical hookups are available, but the campground has a dump station, fresh water hydrants, and a boat launch. RVs up to 30 feet are accommodated.
Showers are token-operated, with tokens purchased on-site from a machine that takes $1 and $5 bills at 50 cents per token, giving two minutes of water per token. As Mea H. notes, "unfortunately the only way to find out water temperature is by putting in a token." Bathroom cleanliness draws consistent praise across reviews, though multiple visitors have encountered non-functioning toilets, suggesting conditions can vary. No soap is provided in the bathrooms, so bring your own. Dogs are allowed at campsites but not on the hiking trails.
Fishing is a draw. Jewel W. found that "watching the bass tournament was fun" from a lakeside site. A short nature path runs through the park, and the visitor center has been noted as a worthwhile stop, with rangers occasionally hosting evening programs. Cell service is limited, with Verizon performing better than T-Mobile based on reviewer speed tests. Bugs are most active at dawn and dusk in spring, particularly around the creek, and largely subside after sunset.
Off-season visits in April or November tend to mean a quieter campground with more site availability. Campers who want a group setting can look at the Group Camping Area at Clear Lake State Park, located just west of Kelsey Creek.
Description
This is the only campground with lakeside sites. Located in between the waters of Clear Lake and Kelsey Slough, these 65 sites offer easy access to trails and fishing with partial shade.
