Reservations are available at $27 per night for this drive-in campground within Merchants Millpond State Park, outside Gatesville in northeastern North Carolina. Sites come equipped with electric, water, and sewer hookups, making the loop accessible to RVs as well as tent campers. Each site has a fire ring, tent pad, and picnic table, and the bathhouse sits centrally within easy walking distance of all sites. Reviewers consistently note the bathhouse is kept clean and well-heated, though one early visitor described the facilities as having "hot water, but the bath house itself looks outdated."
The campground sits at the edge of a cypress swamp ecosystem, and the setting shapes the experience considerably. Sites are well-shaded and spaced with enough separation that neighbors rarely feel close. Several campers single out site 11 as the largest in the loop, positioned directly next to the main trailhead and a path to the bathhouse. The gravel throughout the sites is coarse, which reviewers with small dogs or young children flag as a practical concern worth noting before arrival.
Paddling the millpond is the main draw. The visitor center, roughly a 0.7-mile walk from the campground, rents canoes and kayaks and provides a launch point for marked water trails. Out on the water, campers encounter cypress trees, turtles, birds, and resident alligators, which is also why swimming is not permitted. The Lassiter Trail handles foot traffic well and crosses wooden bridges over the swamp, while a separate bike trail accommodates e-bikes. Fishing is permitted in the park as well.
Timing matters here. Spring and fall visits tend to offer lower occupancy and cooler temperatures. Summer brings heavy mosquito and tick pressure, and multiple reviewers recommend aggressive insect repellent as essential gear. Hammock campers should plan for mosquito netting. For campers interested in a more remote experience within the same park, the Merchants Millpond Canoe-In Campground -- Merchants Millpond State Park and the Merchants Millpond State Park Backpack Campground provide paddle-in and hike-in alternatives with more primitive setups.
