Slough Creek Campground, near Yellowstone National Park, is a fantastic spot for those seeking a more remote camping experience. With only 16 sites, it fills up quickly, so plan to arrive early if you want to snag a spot and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the nearby creek.

## Overview

 Near some of the best wildlife watching opportunities in the park. Located at the end of a two mile dirt road, this campground is best suited for tents and small RVs. There are plenty of hiking and fishing opportunities in the area, including the Slough Creek Trail which begins nearby. Nighttime offers a quiet, unimpeded view of the stars and the possibility of hearing wolves howl. Elevation: 6,250 ft (1905 m).

## Natural Features

 The Slough Creek Campground is located on the park's Northern Range, a few miles from where Slough Creek meets the Lamar River. The Lamar Valley is an excellent place to view wildlife, with it being one of the major summer grounds for bison and elk, which attracts predators like wolves and grizzly bears. Elk, bison, deer, and pronghorn thrive in the grasslands of this area, known as the northern range. In fact, some of the largest wild herds of bison and elk in North America are found here. The northern range is critical winter habitat for these large animals, which in turn provide food for several packs of wolves. Coyotes are also common, and occasional bobcat, cougar, or red fox are reported. The gorge and cliffs between the junction and Tower Fall provide habitat for bighorn sheep, osprey, peregrine falcons, and red-tailed hawks. Both grizzly and black bears are sighted throughout the area, particularly in the spring. Black bears are more commonly seen around Tower Fall and Tower Junction. Grizzlies are sometimes seen in the Lamar Valley and on the north slopes of Mount Washburn, particularly in the spring when elk are calving. Road pullouts provide excellent places from which to watch wildlife. The campground can access the Slough Creek Trail, which follows a historic wagon trail into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness beyond Yellowstone. It begins with a steep climb then descends to the first meadow. Stop and relax here or continue to the second meadow. Be alert for bears and moose. Slough Creek is a popular fishing area.

Visited Slough Creek on Vacation in Yellowstone,  The Tetons and Lewis and Clarke Caverns.

Excellent. 12$ night in national park. Hard to come by. This is also the side of Yellowstone where all the buffalo roam. Beautiful canyon you can fish or walk up. Watch out for them bears.. met amazing people here. Camp host was super friendly.

Rather inexpensive, awesome wildlife I mean who doesn't love seeing wild buffalo. First time to Yellowstone so I think it was a success!

Absolutely the best campground in Yellowstone.  Quiet (no generators), out of the way, and in the incredible Lamar Valley.  

Hard to get a spot so you have to arrive at 5:30ish in the morning as there are only 16 campsites.  But, it is worth it.  

Best time is early/mid July to avoid run off on Slough Creek.

If you want to see wildlife during you Yellowstone adventure then Slough Creek Campground is the way to go. During our visit we got to see Bison on our drive coming in, deer feeding at the edge of the campground and watched a black bear for 30 minutes just a mile down the hiking trail. But to get a campsite you have to be prepared, prepared as in get here in the early morning so you can grab a sight as soon as one become available, this campground is often full by 8am if not earlier. You can leave the RV crowd behind here, most campers are tent camping or just have a small camper, the bigger on won't fit here. A nice quiet campground with Slough Creek running right next to most of the sights made for a good nights sleep. All sites have picnic tables and a metal fire ring. This is bear territory and you need to lock up those food items in your car/truck or in one of the bear proof lockers located through out the campground, just be ready to share with other campers. Site has some of the cleanest vault toilets around. Trash and recycling is available as well. Water is from a hand pump and the water is top notch. If you like to star gaze then you can't do any better than here, no light pollution lets you see everything our night sky has to offer.

I loved listening to the creek here, and watching the wildlife that frequently came to the ford. Very nice little campground for peace and quiet away from the bustle of the main campgrounds in the park, but it is primitive. Vault toilets, no showers.

What a great place to stay... but make sure you get there early because sites fill up quickly. The sounds of the creek are so peaceful and the starry night sky was incredible. 

Arrive early!

Fantastic campsite if you can book it. Had to book the second they opened up the reservations. Our site was a short walk to the creek. Fantastic and informative camp hosts. There was a bison in the middle of the campground!! Drinking water from a hand pump well. Fire ring with rotating grill grates. This particular spot basically shared parking spots with our neighboring site. And their tent was pretty much right outside our Campervan door. So that was a little rough. There were also a TON of mosquitoes. Which made it difficult to relax. Cleanest vault toilets I've ever seen. 

Not your mainstream campsite

The road down to Slough Creek Campground is about 2.5 miles of gravel. If it is dry, it tends to have a lot of pot holes. During rainy season, the mud can be very deep. There is also a small hill right at the start that can be difficult to climb if the conditions are poor. However, it is one of the more remote campgrounds in the park with stunning views. Bison are often seen nearby and if you are lucky you may hear wolves at night. The sites are spacious and not too close together. The vault toilet was clean and well kept. I had pretty good service with Verizon.

This is a great place to camp if you can get a spot. Plan on showing up before the sun rises to get in line.
