## Overview

 Hunter Peak Campground is located on the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway/State Highway 296, approximately four miles south of the junction with scenic Beartooth Highway/U.S. Highway 12. The campground is about 60 miles northeast of Cody, in northwestern Wyoming.
## Recreation

 The Clarks Fork offers outstanding fishing opportunities for rainbow and cutthroat trout. Many hiking trails are located in the area, including the Clarks Fork Trailhead, which is across the highway from the campground.
## Facilities

 This small campground contains single-family campsites, each equipped with a table and campfire ring. Vault toilets, hand-pumped water, and trash collection are provided. A host is on-site. Firewood may be gathered in the area. Fuel and sundries are available in the nearby community of Crandall. Sites 5, 6, 7, and 8 are available for reservation.  The campground sits on the banks of the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River, at an elevation of 6,500 feet. A mixed conifer forest covers the campground. A variety of wildlife, including grizzly bear, deer and elk makes its home in the area.

 The Beartooth Highway was deemed \"the most beautiful drive in America,\" by the late Charles Kuralt. It snakes across the rugged Beartooth Mountains from Red Lodge to Cooke City, Mont., and is the highest elevation highway in the Northern Rockies. Along the way, visitors are treated to sweeping views and plentiful outdoor recreation opportunities. Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance is approximately 24 miles from the campground via the Beartooth Highway. The park offers unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities, as well as breathtaking scenery and unique geological features.

The Best Camping Near Cooke City, Montana

I've camped here for years, with good reason. It's in a beautiful area and offers the chance to base a camp near Cody, WY, Cooke City, MT, and the Beartooth Hwy. and take day trips or hikes. The scenery is dramatic and the altitude (about 6500 feet) makes it a terrific escape from summer heat. The facilities are basic but clean, and the campground is suitable for tent and RV campers. I do advise having bear spray for hikes and to keep in your tent at night "just in case".

Pretty little campground along a scenic road

This campground had more people than we expected. Most sites emptied out for the day so it’s pretty quiet. The host camps right at the start. This is along the road but downhill a bit. You can’t see traffic but you can hear it. Sites are large but don’t hide you from other campers. We preferred more privacy so the dog wouldn’t get upset by others moving around. 

  

It’s still a pleasant place. The vault toilets are clean. The hand pump works so water is available here. This is a nice camp but we think others are more scenic.

Stretched out campground in beautiful bear country

Located in the middle of the scenic byways.  Nice enough but a little too overgrown for us.  No cell service.  Primitive feel but campground was full!

BRING BUG SPRAY! Campground is very clean and in a great area. The drive to it is amazing. Be warned there are lots of mosquitoes but big spray will solve that problem.

Great campground but BEWARE the sites are not as big as the US Forest Service site says they are as rigs over 28 feet will have trouble fitting.  We are 33 feet and only one site would fit us and fortunately we were able to snag it!!!  DON'T drink the water without boiling first.  Other than that it was a beautiful campground and loved our stay.

Nice tent sites maybe a popup but small! Would be a nice stay easy off road.
