## Overview

 Vedauwoo Tent Campground contains a loop of 20 tent-only sites. All sites have tables, fire rings, trash pick up and access to vault toilets. Water may be available inside the main campground, look for the water handpump in the main campground's northern loop containing sites 19-29. There is access to rock climbing and a nature trail through the rocks. The Vedauwoo Tent Campground will have a mix of reservation sites and first-come, first-served sites for the 2025 season. If you are not reserving your site, you may be able to pay for your campsite(s) by cash or check once you are at the campground. 
## Recreation

 The rock formations at Vedauwoo provide oppotrunity for all types of rock climbing. Sightseeing and wildflower viewing begin within a short walk or drive from any campsite. Turtle Rock trail leaves from the campground and winds its way between multiple rock formations while passing meadows, streams, beaver ponds and forested areas. Box Canyon trail leaves from the picnic area, contains great views along a short distance and is fully accessible to people with disabilities. 
## Facilities

 Vedauwoo Tent Campground accomodates only tents with parking spaces for a normal sized vehicle. Sites are equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, and pedestal grills. The campground also offers vault toilets, trash receptacles, and a water handpump. No electrical hook-ups, water hook-ups, or black water hook-ups are available. Handpump water may be available in the main campground from July to September. These dates may vary due to weather, well and/or pump maintenance, and water testing requirements. As such, we encourage you to bring your own water or call ahead. 
## Natural Features

 The campground winds around the boulders, slabs and cliffs of the Vedauwoo rock formation. The formation is made up of 10 square miles of weathered Sherman granite, providing lots of space to explore. The vegetation is a variety of Limber pine, Engleman spruce, Douglas fir, and Aspen. The general area was once used as a hideout for outlaws. Native Americans thought playful spirits piled up the boulders.

The Best Camping Near Buford, Wyoming

These are free campsites along a dirt road. The road, at least when dry, is not hard to drive on. Quite a few pull-offs that serve as campsites. They do not have restrooms here or tables, most of the sites just have a fire ring made out of rocks. This is a really interesting area to explore though. Lots of cool rock formations, a little pond with a lot of aspens, and trails nearby. The only thing that I didn't like about this area was that you could tell a lot of people come out here just to party because of all of the trash left behind. Other than that I would recommend this area for camping.

Vedauwoo Campground

We were recommended by friends to stay here. So glad we did. Amazing view and great campground. We went hiking with the kids and explored the amazing types of plants that grow in the area. We got some wonderful pictures. 

Amazing View

Nice campground, a little noise from highway 80. Sound really carries, can hear the climbers as they scale the rocks. The forest service says there aren't any moose here, but we saw a cow moose with two calves on a hike in the surrounding Medicine Bow National Forest. Tent sites have tent pads, campfire rings and picnic tables.

The cliffs and rocks here are lovely and there are some hiking trails. The campsites are pretty open and since there aren’t too many trees the tents seem really close together. Great views though so you don’t feel penned into some trees like at some camp sites. Not too far from Laramie or Cheyenne (or the Lone Tree) and a good place to stay for a few days if you’re exploring the Medicine Bow.

There are easy and beautiful trails leading from campground to the main attraction, the rocks! Saw some deer, moose tracks, and a (not dangerous) snake. 

Unique geology

If you’re driving up from Colorado Springs, etc. on the way to Yellowstone, Tetons, etc. this is a nice simple place (convenient to the highway) to stay to avoid being stuck in the car forever. The Medicine Bow National Forest deserves a dedicated trip of its own though! The main feature here is the rocks and there are a few trails that allow you to explore them. We saw moose scat and a (harmless) rat snake not far from the campground. Nice picnic tables to choose from. All the campsites we saw (and used) were fairly open but shady. The views from the campground are excellent. On the way in, stop at the information board and pick up a free paper map. This area, like many parks out west, have complex networks of dirt roads, letting you explore more and really feel like you’re in the backcountry. 


Near CO/WY border, great geology 

My aunt and uncle live in Laramie, WY, just a short drive from Vedauwoo. Boy does that make me lucky! This park is great. The trail system isn't very extensive and people aren't the greatest about not leaving garbage up on the rocks, but if you have even the slightest ability to clime up some boulders it is worth a trip. The rocks are massive and if you climb up you are rewarded with some incredible views. It is said the rocks are millions of years old and years and years of rainfall on the rocks have smoothed and rounded them off. There are plenty of sites and picnic tables to break for lunch. Turtle Rock trail is really nice and about 2 hours with a family. This is my favorite park in that section of the state.

**Campsite Review**

This place is as advertised, and that's a good thing. All of these 28 sites are first come, first serve and since it is so conveniently located off I-80 and only 20 miles west of I-25, it's a wonderful spot to camp that's not hard to get to. There is a welcome area right off the highway with information on the surrounding hiking and bouldering opportunities, with maps included. I was rained and hailed on the night I stayed and into the next morning, so I wasn't able to take advantage of the hiking options, but the scenery of this place is very picture worthy and campsites are dispersed well enough so even when this campground is near capacity, you'd still feel like you've got privacy.

There are bathrooms (outhouses) with TP and places for drinking water. Also dumpsters that can lock, nice for keeping wildlife at bay. Every site has your fire pit and picnic table, with the added feature of a BBQ grill. Bring cash so you can pay the site fees, which start at $10/night.

**Gear Review**

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products from time to time - today I am testing new(er) flavors from Mountain House, [Breakfast Skillet](https://www.mountainhouse.com/m/product/breakfast-skillet.html?variant_id=183) and [Biscuits and Gravy](https://www.mountainhouse.com/m/product/biscuits-gravy.html?variant_id=184). I've eaten a lot of Mountain House flavors over the years, and one thing remains constant - they make great freeze dried meals. The other constant is I'm always having them when I'm either backpacking, it's cold and raining, I'm starving, or all of those things at the same time because they're quick and easy to make and there's virtually no clean up. Campers and trippers know all food tastes better as you become more miserable, so while I love the food, I should really try one of these when it's nice and sunny outside.

Breakfast Skillet: 5 out of 5\. Good ratio of egg, hash, and veggies. They even get you started with some salt and pepper spice taste to go with the chewy eggs and hash. Only thing missing was the taste of burnt skillet, which is probably a good thing. This meal was gone in no time.

Biscuits and Gravy: 4 out of 5\. It's not the most appealing looking from the flavor Rolodex, but go with your gut and chow down. It's a little on the salty side, but it still fills you up. I do recommend taking the directions' advice and after a few minutes open up the package to stir around the contents. I thought shaking it in the bag would do, but some of the biscuit pieces are large and won't cook properly without the actual stirring from a fork/spoon.

Pro Tip: The bags seal really well, and when I'm cold I like to place them in my jacket or in my hands to help give me some warmth while it cooks.

Love Vedawoo! Easy drive from Denver and a climbers paradise. For fewer crowds drive past the Campground and dispersed camp on national forest land. Check out Beehive Buttress one exit farther if you are a sport climber!

Climbing Mecca

Near the beehive climbing area, there is free dispersed camping.

We stayed here 2 nights, frost on the ground in the mornings. A short approach to climbing, about 15 minutes to the crag. We shared the crag with a outdoor school program.

We ran into some hunters while camping here, but had no issues.

Cold in Oct - Dispersed Camping in Medicine Bow

This place is fantastic and easy to get to. Located right off I-80 and less than 20 miles from Laramie WY.

**Campground Review:** We arrived on the Friday afternoon of Father’s Day weekend, and there were a few tent sites available. All sites are $10.00-- If just visiting the park, there is a $5.00 day use fee. There are two loops that both accommodate large RV's down to tents. We chose a pack-in tent site that was down a trail about an 1/8 mile surrounded by the granite rock formations the area is know for. It was kind of tucked away from the rest of the campers in the area. Even way back in here, they had a very nice picnic table and metal fire rings with a grill for use. The campground was very clean. In the main area, there are restrooms and drinking water available. The camp host was very helpful with directions. (wish I could recall his name) He gave us some trail maps of the area. There are multiple mountain biking trails which we had a ball exploring. They are open to hikers and horseback riders as well so be aware and be courteous. The area is very well known for off-width rock climbing. There Is a wall of sport climbing and many boulder projects. Be aware the granite can flake off so use established routes.

Restrooms were tidy and well stocked with TP. there is water available near the restroom area.

The Badger Creek Fire was currently burning to the south causing a lot of smoke in the area. There was not a fire ban at the time we visited.

**Gear Review:** Occasionally the Dyrt will offer gear to test out and demo on a camping trip. I was lucky to have the opportunity to test and review theICEMULE Pro size Large 23L backpack cooler [https://icemulecoolers.com/collections/pro-coolers/products/the-icemule-pro-large](https://icemulecoolers.com/collections/pro-coolers/products/the-icemule-pro-large) This cooler is amazing! I was skeptical at first. I let my teenage daughter use it prior to this trip on a beach outing and it is now the new favorite cooler for these girls! They raved about it! The ICEMULE Pro 23L held 10 pounds of ice and 10+ beverages and our food that needed kept cold. There was still ice In the bottom 2 1/2 days later when we returned home. The website says this will hold an 18 pack of beer, I don’t doubt that. Since we were camped at a pack In site, being able to pack In our cold stuff like a backpack was a great feature! We were even able to pack everything out between the two of us In just one trip! Normally a cooler of this capacity would require a singe trip for 1 or possibly 2 people. The cooler seals by rolling the opening down and buckling it closed. No zippers or latches. There is an air vent you can blow into to create additional insulation for the cooler. The cooler also folds/rolls down to a compact size when not in use. This cooler is easy to use, a dream to pack anywhere you need a cooler, and most Importantly: keeps stuff COLD! This is now an every trip favorite item! And they are currently on sale (20% off!) on the ICEMULE website!

The campground was great overall and well maintained. Showed up to it and we did find a lot of trash scattered. Other than that it was close to some great climbing and hiking.

Van Camper 2018

This is our go to campground coming from Denver. It's only 1.5 hours away and it offers biking, hiking, and climbing galore. We love to come in the Fall when the Aspens are changing and we always find ourselves pretty secluded here. There are other people in the sites but we haven't felt overrun yet.

Easy Escape for 3/4 of the year

A quaint, yet special area. The view alone is worth camping. Me and a few friends get together their every summer to enjoy climbing the amazing surrounding rock formations, relax in hammock ladder we set up through the trees, and hike the awesome trails.

This is a great little campground with sites dispersed throughout the area. These are free sites. However when we pulled in after dark it was hard to tell what was day use only and what was available for camping. There was a sign near where we camped that said “authorized overnight parking” and there was also a no camping sign. So We were a little confused. But otherwise it was a great basic site without hookups. 

Can’t beat the price!

Great campground with incredible views. They had secluded spots off the road 50' or so and spots right along the road for easy access. Pit toilets only &amp; no electricity but they did have hydrants for water.

Wowsa! Those rock formations are stunning! The campground was great - plenty of campsites and lovely trails to hike. We were even visited by a moose and her calf on our first night! The ranger is very friendly and helpful. The water is shut off for 2019 so be prepared to bring your own. Laramie is just a quick jaunt down I-80 which is nice if you forget anything. My only complaint was the highway noise. It was such a bummer to hear semi trucks and car engines and even the train rather than the peace and quiet you normally experience while camping. Other than that...we loved it! 

Gorgeous!

This campground had great facilities and sites, especially for only$10 nightly. If you stay at the loop furthest from the highway, you feel like you’re deeper in wildness because you no longer see or hear the highway traffic. We camped here because it’s so close to the nearby world-class rock climbing. It did get pretty windy during or stay(gusts up to 30mph) but otherwise our stay in mid-August had comfortable temperatures. The bathrooms were pristine. Campsites has ample distance between each other and we had no issues with noisy neighbors.  Plenty of well-behaved dogs - dogs are allowed everywhere as long as they are leashed. Unfortunately the water hookup has been off for a couple seasons, so you need to drive 15 minutes away to get potable water. The scenery is beautiful during the day and night. We plan to stay here again!

The dyrt has some old info on their overview page, there are no reservations - it is first come first serve, there is no water hookups, but there are several water spickets that are available when the water quality meets standards for drinking water - sometimes water is not available (check USDA Vadauwoo Camprround site for up to date info).

The sites are a combination of back-in, pull-offs, and walk into tent camping sites. All afford amazing views of the unique rock formations and easy access to hiking, climbing and repelling sites within the area.

Amazing campground with amazing  and unique pink granite mountains 

We were driving out to Oregon and decided to stay the night here since it’s not too far off the interstate. The site was fairly secluded and interstate noise was not bad for how close it was. We plan to go again and try some biking and hiking in the area. $5 with national park pass ($10 without). No water.

Quiet and easy to access

Winds were rough however when no wind it was perfect. Make sure to heavy heavy duty stakes and tie down your tent.

Very cool area lots to explore

It’s an awesome place to chill, and explore. Turtle Rock trailhead connects to Vedauwoo campground. Boulders in your campsite. Great for kids, and climbers alike. Loud at night from I-80 and windy. But you can’t move I-80, and it’s Wyoming.

Unique 

Best place to start dispersed camping!! Amazing rock formations, hiking and biking trails all over... 

CON: 
1. BRING YOUR OWN DRINKING WATER AND A LOT! (Well water, but a lot of minerals that you can see with..) 
2. It can be warm or cold.. but it is always windy; so windy at times that it feels like your tent all fly away..
3. Close to the highway, so some sites, beware of highway sound and car passing

PRO:
1. Amazing sites, especially for dispersed camping!!
2. Bathroom is basic/ decent. TP but no hand wash station! 
3. Location location location!! Can’t wait to do another short camping trip! 
4. So much to explore! Do visit Hidden Falls! Round trip about 3 hours with kids and bring plenty of water. Kids will totally enjoy the stream and water fall area! 

Amazing campsite!! 

We travelled to Vedauwoo on a suggestion from friends and were tremendously surprised by the beauty of the area nestled between Cheyenne and Laramie.  

We camped on the dispersed area just to the east of the campground in a pleasant spot in the trees and boulders a good distance from the dust of the road.  One of the great things about dispersed camping in this area is it affords some distance between campers and gives you a sense of your own space.

August weather in Wyoming is plenty warm during the day and cool in the night and it met our expectations.  The fabled Wyoming breeze was actually less than expected.  The only drawback was the fire ban in effect due to the wildfires in both Wyoming and nearby Colorado.

We would encourage visitors to explore the various trails as each one we set out on rewarded us with magnificent views and the surprise of a swift creek feeding a number of picture perfect beaver ponds.  

This is a great camping area and is close enough to Laramie for any needs.  Vedauwoo is well worth a visit.  Thank Wyoming!

Wyoming Magic

Checked in about 8:30pm on weekday for car/tent camping.  Got last spot on upper tent loop (FC/FS-self serve).   Upper tent loop also has some RV spots. It seems like a very popular spot for XC RV drivers. The upper loop was very quiet, both the people and the area, and far enough from Interstate that Hwy noise was not an issue. The only problems were the wind(strong in am), and the lack of running water. Vault toilets were clean enough. The faucets near toilets did not work. The only available water was from the green well pump, and it had noticeable color to it. I used it for cooking and cleaning, but not drinking. Great trails! We did a nice 3.5 mile loop around Turtle Rock. It has good and climbing/bouldering, wish I had more time for that. It was cool due to a recent rainfall, and the 8000'ish elevation kept it that way at night. All creeks were dry in late august, and the 3 ponds were nearly so. Very pretty spot that feels more remote than it is. There is a lower tent walk in loop, which is much better sheltered from road noise and wind.  The lower tent loop has vault toilets, but it does not have water as far as I could tell.  Lower tent loop was completely vacant and available, while upper RV/tent area was full.

Pretty, close to HWY, nice trails, not much water

This place is amazing.  I stopped in for a quick overnight and wish i could have spent more time exploring.  I was here the beginning of September and there were very few people camping but the site i found had plenty of space. I don't require much while camping so i can't speak to the tune of restrooms or water.. Definitely a spot I will return when i have more time..

Such an amazing hidden gem! There are plenty of dispersed camping spots. Great views, cool rock formations will definitely be coming back! Great for star gazing was lucky enough to see the neowise comet perfectly ❤️

Best Hidden gem

but when I stayed for one night in early Oct. on a cross country trip the wind was gusting at 40 to 60 mph, it was very cold and water was shut off. The sites were large, wooded and clean all with tables and fire rings. There were flush toilet facilities in each area and trash dumpsters. It was the first high elevation coming out of Nebraska and it left me breathless as in gasping for air. I think there were several good hiking opportunities, but left for another time. 



Probably a wonderful campground 

This is a great stopover on the way to something. I say stopover because you can hear the traffic of I80 from the campsite at all hours of the night. Major road for truckers. It’s far enough away that most sleepers can tune it out. But if your a light sleeper like me, it will periodically wake you up. I’m sure if you got a campsite situated further back, it wouldn’t be as much of an issue though. You’ll still hear it, but probably not at loud as our campsite. The rocks are awesome though! Great if you love bouldering! We spent one night here as a stopover on the way to Green River Lakes and decided to spend the morning climbing. Day well spent! There was an owl that hung out with us at our campsite too! A local said there was a secret waterfall in this cave like formation that wasn’t too far away, but we didn’t have enough time to explore that. So I would ask around about it if you have the time to go looking.

This review is for the abundant dispersed camping, not the two official camping loops.

I love this place. With an asterisk. This seven mile dirt road is filled with sprouts of other dirt roads that is stunningly beautiful and fairly quiet. Beautiful spots to camp and you can tuck yourself away behind a rock formation and far from your neighbors. 

Great rock formations for climbing, mountain biking, abundant Aspen trees for your hammock and right on the edge of Curt Gowdy State Park, which has a broad network of wonderfully maintained mountain bike and hiking trails and plenty of motorized and non motorized water sports. Showers and flush toilet bathrooms and a camp store can be found in here in non-COVID days. 

The animal life is great too. We've had moose and pronghorn deer right at our campsite. And that gets me to…the asterisks. Not only are moose around, but so are mice. In 2 of my 7 visits here we have taken on mice. The last time it was a lot of mice. I mean a lot of mice. I now carry mouse traps with me because of this place. We had tens of mice inside our camper for two days straight. Eating our food and gnawing on wood. Ended up bringing some of them home with us too. The cat got 3. I trapped another 5. Our garbage can was like a Civil War photograph for mice. Also, this place has become popular and can get a little overrun on the weekends with people running generators, shooting shotguns and running around on OHVs. Hard to be more annoying. Last, Wyoming is synonymous with wind. So be prepared for that possibility.

Vedauwoo Dispersed

Legit spot if you are into climbing or not! Campsites are very spacious; at least the back in site that we had. Had a moose run through camp. Was a bit chilly and water wasn’t on yet, but I won’t mark it down for that. Would absolutely recommend. 

Rocks and stuff

Vedauwoo is easily accessible off I80. Many sites to choose from of all different sizes. But the best thing about this campground are the opportunities! Amazing rock formations, hiking, rock climbing for all skill levels. We came in on a early Sunday evening &amp; had plenty of options.
We will be staying here again!!

Amazing Rock Formations

Nice clean campground.  Kid friendly. Dog friendly. Only reason for 4 stars is the highway noise from I80.

Two loops with around 15 sites each. Camp sites are at the base of giant boulders with trails to turtle rock or other picnic sites. Gorgeous!

Stunning sites with everything you need

Nice camping ground around the bouldering rocks just outside of Laramie. Spots aren’t too close to another, campground looks well maintained. Really nice place, only downside is the interstate noise in the background 

Perfect bouldering and climbing location

We got there on a Tuesday around 3:00. There was one spot in the campground proper, but dang it was so windy and there was no buffer from the wind which is likely why it was still available. We didn’t stay. We drove through the extra land spots. It was super rough terrain and they were all occupied as far as we could see. This was a beautiful spot and I am glad we stopped to check it out. Wish we could have stayed. There was a state park about 10 miles West of there we drove past. But we were heading East, so grabbed a hotel instead. 

Hard to get a site

The campsite is right off highway 80. We didn’t think the noise was very bothersome at all. Most campsites pretty spread apart, with a few closer together. We had campsite #15 and it was of the more private campsites in the place. Site #16 is more of a walk in site, but is in my opinion, the coolest in the place. Site #16 is hard to find, you have to keep going back between sites 17 and 15 to find it. Cost is $10/night. Potable water pump (although water is a little discolored) and toilets. The bathrooms were overrun with flies. You cannot get firewood here so bring it with you. There’s an overflow parking area at the pay booth. All sites looked like they had room for at least 2 cars, and some (like sites #15-17) had room for more. We got there at 9:00 AM on Friday and there were tons of spots. There were still spots open at 4:00 PM too. As a lot of people mentioned, it’s pretty windy so you need to pay attention to fire bans and red flag warnings.

10/10 - Great Spot

We did not stayed in this park but we enjoyed it a lot great hikes a lot of rock climbing sightseeing my kids loved it

One of our favorite parks

This campground is not far off the beaten path and you can hear highway noise but far enough off that we felt like we were camping! The site was very windy that evening but surrounding rock formations help block the wind some. Felt lucky to find a cool spot when passing through. 

Cool location right off highway 

We found this campground by accident, but so glad we did. I can not believe how beautiful it is. The rock formations surrounding it are amazing &amp; there are endless opportunities for hiking. The camping spots are very nice, a little small, but they do offer larger sites for rv's &amp; 5'rs. Easy access right off I-80, the drive in is paved. Plenty of first come sites providing you get there early.

Scenery for days

Beautiful campsite. Have had a hard time securing a site during peak season. Was able to find many sites available in late September. Enjoyed hiking and biking.

great boondocking site

Got here after 11pm on a Wednesday night and found only 1 free spot. The place was packed. The sites we saw were fairly spread out. Awesome rock formations all around with trails throughout the area. We were there for only one night, but wish we could have stayed longer to explore.

Great rock formations, lots of climbers around. Very peaceful beautiful campground. Some highway noise but minimal.

Vedauwoo, great boondocking I’m

$20/night cash or check for off season first come first serve. You can reserve and pay electronically “on” season. I got an rv spot (last in upper loop) but a few tent spots open while searching. Also a few more spots opened in lower loop as I was unloading. Came to check out new rock climbing routes. Before the “season” here starts. Spaces are spaced nicely. Bear signs posted so be mindful of food and trash left out. It is Wyoming so very windy but sunny. 

Update 

Headed to Colorado and had this gem picked out way ahead of time. Came mid week and found a spot. This place is awesome. One of the most amazing views of any campground we have stayed at. Lots of opportunities for van, small RV , and tent camping . Will stay here again. 
Vault toilets, bring your own water, there are fire pits tables and cell reception is good 

July camping overnight 

Loved this place. Great rocks, great locations great wildlife.

Yes you can hear the Interstate but it's great wondering where the semis are off to at sunset.

Loads of cones to get fire started and don't miss the beaver pond. It's got beavers and moose!
