Tall trees crowd the interior roads at Castle Mound Campground, close enough that drivers towing larger rigs will want to slow down and pay attention through the turns. The campground sits within Black River State Forest just outside Black River Falls, Wisconsin, and runs year-round with sites ranging from $21 to $36 per night. The layout divides roughly into a loop for electric hookups and a separate area for tent camping, with sites that vary considerably in size and spacing. Some feel open and exposed to neighboring campers; others benefit from heavier tree cover that provides both shade and a degree of visual separation.
The woods themselves are the defining feature. Owls, squirrels, and raccoons are regular presences, and the canopy keeps most sites shaded through the day. Road noise from the nearby highway is audible, though several reviewers note the surrounding trees do muffle it to a manageable level. Jennifer K. describes it as a "wooded campground" with "lots of space and shade in all spots," and on weekday visits the campground tends to run well below capacity.
Facilities are straightforward. Vault toilets are distributed throughout the loops; a separate shower building near the entrance has flush toilets and hot showers. Drinking water and the dump station are both located at the front of the campground near the visitor kiosk. Firewood is available on-site at rates reviewers consistently flag as low compared to other state parks in the region. A hiking trail with rock formations and a summit view of Castle Mound is accessible directly from the campground, and mountain bike trails head out from camp as well.
Campers with RVs longer than 30 feet should note the site limit and the tight road geometry. Some parking pads sit on noticeably uneven ground, which can complicate leveling. Out-of-state visitors pay an additional Wisconsin State Forest vehicle pass fee on top of the nightly rate. Reservations are available and worth booking in advance for electric sites on summer weekends, when that loop tends to fill. East Fork Campground, another Black River State Forest site, is a short drive away for campers who want a quieter or more rustic alternative.
Description
Two forks of the Black River flow through this 68,000-acre forest comprised of pine and oak woods under high sandstone abutments. This central Wisconsin forest offers many recreational opportunities, including camping, canoeing, hunting, hiking, skiing and ATV riding. Three different family campgrounds are found within the forest (Castle Mound, East Fork and Pigeon Creek). Both an outdoor and indoor group camp are available at the East Fork Campground. A reservable shelter is in the picnic area at Castle Mound.
