The Best Camping Near Warrens, Wisconsin

The trails are nice and long, and seem reasonably well maintained. The Pigeon Creek spillway is open for swimming and shallow crafts, but has no lifeguard. Firewood was listed as available from attendants, but I only saw park rangers briefly, and they had no hours listed.

LOTS OF TICKS be aware to check yourself and any pets you may bring. Site was nice, hike felt transformative and lake was incredible to jump in after.

Central Wisconsin campground 

Some of our favorite camps are State Forest campgrounds. The fees are reasonable, they are generally quiet, and are very well kept. This was no exception, and in fact, was one of the best we've seen.

It's about a mile drive off the main road/interstate, and the road is a bit bumpy (older pavement), but very accessible and very well marked with park signs. Once you get there, it appears there is a booth to pay, but it wasn't manned This time of year, although "honesty is the best policy" applies and there is a place to drop money. Also, if manned, you can purchase what they call a "rack" of firewood for $3\. Seems very reasonable, but not sure what the bundle looks like. Immediately, there is a picnic area and playground with BBQ pits and a sandy beach. Lovely! Also seems to be some sort of scenic trail around the lake.

There were quite a few sites…maybe 40\. But each is private. Each one is nestled in the trees (with very few exceptions). Each has a fire pit, picnic table, very easy access for a car or trailer to pull in, and they all seemed fairly flat. Pit type bathrooms were scattered around, and were very clean. About 2 toilets per little structure, and they all had hand sanitizer at the door. Water pumps were also scattered…a nice addition to the area.

A very nice place to jump off the highway and put up camp for the night.

**_as a fun little addition to the state forest campground, they had a few signs at the beach where you could set up a camera and take a selfie. Then, they had instructions to tag the photo in a particular way and post it on Instagram at the @TravelWisconsin page. Kinda fun!_**

**_As another side note…Elk were re-introduced to this area a few years back and you may get to see some while you are here! But please keep your distance, they are delicate as they establish and grow the herd_**

The sites are secluded, quiet and easy to access - And you might see elk!

A beautiful campground! We had a nice spot that was very spacious. The out house is a good distance from all the camp sites and it was very quiet. 

The lake and trail next to it were beautiful, but there were a lot of bugs!! Definitely bring som to keep them away. 



Beautiful and Quiet!

Stayed here two years in a row with two families and we loved it.  Bugs were sometimes bad but it was June in the woods in Wisconsin.  Nice space and enjoyed the beach area with the kids.

Great quiet campground!

I grew up in Minnesota, 13 years ago went to college in Madison/married a boy from there, and moved back to Minnesota after college. This means that I have driven past Black River Falls State Forest at least 36 times as an adult. It is an excellent halfway point between me and my Wisconsin-dwelling family, so this past weekend was the first time that I’ve actually chosen it as my actual destination. 

  

There are several different sections to this park, and good grief the social media presence of this park is terrible. I’m starting to think that this is because the locals do not want non-locals to come and spoil the charms of the park so they figure that they should just completely ignore improving their website. Anyway, on a whim we wound up at Pigeon Creek campground.

  

 If you look at the map of the park you can see that there is water and beach access, but you don’t really know just how charming it is. The entire time we were there I kept on exclaiming how it was so beautiful in the most retro of ways. You should know that the water is a fun shade of root beer, this is from the trees and mosses leaching into the water(check out my pic of the park sign for a bit more info). The water is tested weekly to make sure that it is safe to swim in. A lot of people had stand up paddleboards and kayaks.

  

During these pandemic times you need to make sure to buy your pass online or via phone ahead of time. There is no attendant at the little ranger station at the entrance- at this time you couldn’t buy firewood either. Don’t try to pull a quick one on the park service though, because a ranger will come around and inspect your vehicle if you are parked at the picnic area and approach you to find out which vehicle is yours. 

  

This park is rustic and does not offer showers. We came here with no expectations of the campsites, so we were very pleased to find that they are large, mostly packed dirt (many reviews mention heavy TICK populations eek), and offer a good deal of privacy. Sites that I like(check out pics): 204, 205, 234,235, 212,224, and 226.

Unexpectedly quaint

This is a really beautiful campground with wooded private sites. Each campsite has lots of space with a large table and fire ring... some with mossy areas which are extra comfortable under a tent. 

This was a great stop on our way through to the BWCA a state away. We got a great night sleep with our tent at the base of a magnificent pine tree. The smell of the pine trees and forest was delightful.

There was no one at the gatehouse as we drove in, but we had booked our site online, so just drive to our site. There were only half a dozen sites taken during our stay, so it was even more private than anticipated.

The only negative was that the two pumps for water at the campground pumped brown water. We decided not to use the water as it wasn’t clean looking. Perhaps it was rust, but it was not worth a health risk. We drive a couple miles back down the road to the gas station/convenience store and got some potable gallons. 

All in all, a very nice stay. 

Quiet and Lovely

I've been going to Pigeon Creek ever since I was a child, and I have always loved it. It's one of those campgrounds that have a special place in your heart. All the Wisconsin State Parks are great. This one has a nice man-made lake with good fishing and lots of turtles. All of the sites are well maintained and secluded from one-another so you have good privacy. There are the typical pit toilets and well water available in multiple locations around the campground. And a nice beach to hang out at during the day. The mosquitos can get bad as there are some swampy areas around the campground, but nothing more than expected. Love it there!

Great overall space!  New jungle gym for the kids, great 1.5mile nature walk around lake and certain sites have nice privacy.  Would come back
