Hikers accessing the Piney Ridge Trail from Peters Creek will find a large gravel clearing at the trailhead that doubles as an overnight spot. The lot has room for several vehicles, sits atop a ridge in a mix of hardwoods and white pines, and opens to unobstructed sky above. Note that USFS 54A is barricaded to vehicle traffic roughly 200 yards past the parking area, so the road does not continue as it may appear on some maps. Campfires are allowed, pets are welcome, and the access road off Hunt Club Road has a moderate grade with a good gravel surface. This spot works best for hikers who want to stage an early start on the trail without backpacking gear to a separate campsite.
