Hurricane Cliffs BLM dispersed #1-12 spur, near Hurricane, Utah, is a fantastic spot for those who love the great outdoors without the frills. This area offers free camping with spacious sites that come with fire rings, perfect for cozy evenings under the stars.

This expansive trail system was planned with mountain biking in mind and currently includes nearly 40 miles of beginner and intermediate trails. The iconic scenery and flowing singletrack that define the area attract visitors from around the around.

The trail system is defined by La Verkin and Hurricane, UT immediately to the west, UT State Route 9 as the northern boundary, and the sheer flanks of Gooseberry Mesa looming to the east.

Numerous trailheads and access points along UT State Route 59 as well as Sheep Bridge Road provide unlimited opportunity for creative loops and variety for trail users. Please see Directions for recommended day-use parking.

Camping throughout Hurricane Cliffs is limited to 56 Designated Dispersed Sites that were implemented to protect the expansive views and scenic integrity of the area.

Each official site contains a numbered placard and metal fire ring. Camping outside of official, designated sites is prohibited.
All sites are typically accessible by any medium clearance vehicle.
Camping on BLM Lands is allowed for a period not to exceed 14 days within a 28 consecutive day period.

The Best Camping Near Virgin, Utah

This is the first spur in the Hurricane Cliffs designated dispersed BLM camp system.  There are 56 sites total, and this spur is for sites #1 through 12.   Designated dispersed camping means that you are only allowed to camp in marked sites

  

We got #7, and were glad to get something so close to the main road, because Sheep Bridge Rd is a bit too washboarded for us, and we wouldn't have wanted to go very far down the road.  The road is nice and wide and flat, but in a motorhome the washboard is too aggravating.  

  

The place was pretty busy for a mid week in late October, but it may quiet down the further back you go.  We only made it to the entrance to the second spur, where we turned around.

  

The spurs off of Sheep Bridge Rd are hardened dirt, which is better than washboard, but there are areas that are really rutted out so just beware while you drive.  We had no problems in our 26ft motorhome and we saw several vehicles and motorhomes of various types and sizes here as well.

  

The sites here are nice, but you're a bit close to your neighbors.  You definitely don't get that solitary desolate boondock vibe here.  

  

Free roaming cows all over here!  They even come into your site and graze all around you.  We were a bit nervous to pass a whole crowd of them while walking with our dogs but they just stared at us.

  

Lots of mountain bikers in the area, but the trails are open to foot traffic as well so we walked along the trails.

  

Great cell signal here for Verizon and ATT. Really windy!

Close to Neighbors

Easy access, close enough to town for propane, dump, and water at any if the RV resorts for a fee. 

Well managed area 

The view is beautiful. Spaces are decently spaced out so you're not super crowded. They are a little difficult to get into if you're in a large rig but not impossible. This time of year the road is pretty heavily rutted. It is late September. 

Beautiful

Sites were pretty close but yet felt like you were alone in the open space. The highway was close by but we were never bothered by any noise. The sunset was unbelievable and we enjoyed staying here after a day of hiking Zion. 

Awesome camping

Super easy to find, the plots were big with a fire ring. Didn’t feel on top of each other. We have a class B van and made it fine even with the rough roads and snow and ice. It was night time so we took the first available site. The sunrise in this area is beautiful. Definitely worth staying if you’re trying to go to Zion. 

Great location

This dirt spur accessed designated dispersed camps 1-12.  The access road is rough dusty dirt clay mud and impossible if saturated wet.  Sites are rough but large enough for RVs and TTs. Note there are no trees and no shade but the views are awesome. Cell signal is excellent 5g with five bars on T-Mobile.  This spur is closest to Hurricane and the Jem MTB trails bisect this camping spur. No tables, no dumpsters, no water, just pure FREE boondocking.

Plenty of space between sites and a metal fire ring. My only complaint is the road-washboards are BAD.

Good spot

Flat spots with beautiful views. Sheep Bridge road is well graded but definitely lots of washboard. The spur roads where the camping is a rutted out but you can avoid most of the ruts. DON'T ATTEMPT THIS IF ROADS ARE WET.
The map at the entrance only has a few sites designated for RVs but every site is currently being used by an RV.

Beautiful views

It looked pretty busy when we arrived, but we soon found a spot on the first spur on the left up Sheep Bridge road - which is pretty washboarded but not an issue with our 2wd van and 22ft TT; just take it slow. The mountain biking around here is super; we enjoyed the Goosebumps and Hurricane Rim trails as a family (the latter was a challenge, but we all made it!) and I took a trip up to Gooseberry Mesa for the world class rides up there. Easy access to the excellent park and splash pad in Hurricane and 40 mins to Zion NP. A great spot!



Boondocking with epic views!

People camping wherever they want, not in designated spots. Dumping grey water tanks when they leave. Some people are flat out living there 🤪

No Enforcement 

Wide open area.
Stopped in for a couple of days to see Zion Nat. Park.
Beautiful mountain range.
A bit windy by the price was right.

Stayed at site 5

Washboard roads getting in to the site. They are doable with a travel trailer but rough. Sites are small but decent if you can find one. Came on a Wednesday morning in lat October and saw people having to leave because they couldn't get a site.
