The Best Camping Near Heber, Utah

Over Memorial Day weekend, my husband and I got away for a night and dispersed camp in the Unita National forest near the Mill Creek campground. We were planning to stay at the campground but it was closed, so we took advantage of free dispersed camping right outside. This is LNT(leave no trace) camping so be sure to pack out what you pack in. There are no amenities but you are along a water source so if you have a filter, you have water. All along the road there are open fields that can accommodate trailers and bigger parties then just a single tent. Near the campground (and the site we chose) is an outdoor education center which would be fun to go back and visit later in the summer. We really enjoyed camping here as it was peaceful and private (at least when we visited).  Later in the summer that may not be the case, especially close to the road. The biggest issue may be the road. My Mazda3 was able to make it up, but the road was quite rutted and rough and you had to go through a small runoff stream. If you have a lowered vehicle, you may have a tough time but anything with a higher clearance will do just fine. Overall, I loved exploring a new area that I will definitely return to.

Peaceful National Forest Dispersed Camping

Our family really likes dispersed camping near Mill hollow reservoir. It’s very peaceful and scenic! The main road in is fairly easy to navigate but if you venture off the main path you’ll want a vehicle with clearance and possibly 4X4. We cherish the ability to camp like this so we always take out everything we brought in “leave no trace” unfortunately not everyone has the same respect so we typically end up taking out any trash we find from the previous campers. Overall a great place to camp if you’re equipped for dispersed camping! 

Great Place To Camp With Right Equipment

There are only a few solid spots south of Mill Hollow to dispersed car camp, but it makes for a quiet trip if you’re lucky enough to nab one of the spots. The few that we’ve found to be the most comfortable and simple to access are along the river just south of the lake. They’re tucked back into the trees on the east side of the road. There are hiking opps everywhere. Beautiful trails to explore, river banks to walk, and even a small waterfall tucked back into the woods if you know where to look. Love this whole area! 

Seclusion! 

Super pretty and laid back camping. No amenities so bring everything you need. When I went there was only another couple up there so it was pretty secluded. Lots of activities near by.

Incredible area with many options to camp. Couldn’t get much higher than the reservoir due to snow on the road. Quiet area with not too many people around 




Beautiful area with lots of water!!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Road was very accessible lower down with some more adventurous offshoots requiring higher clearance and likely 4x4. We went up an offshoot and navigated through and around some deeper ruts and snow drifts but found an amazing spot on the rim. Fewer people the more altitude we gained. Lots of spots here. Keep driving until you find one, closer in spots are usually taken up with trailers and small rvs. Highly recommend.

Amazing spots the further up you go

Our first time here we secured a fantastic spot in the higher elevation. Great escape from the SLC Valley heat…a short 1.5 hour drive and temp drops 20 degrees from the valley. We were here in late May and there was still snow in places and some roads impassable…but we found a premise spot to watch the sunset and camp with a fire. There are OHV’s and dirt bikes during the day, but kind of cool to watch! 

Incredible Views!

Since we discovered this place back in May, we can’t stop coming here! It’s the best weekend getaway…I camped here two weekends in a row and planning to go back again today. I bought a Starlink mini just so I can stay longer and work from there. Photos are of my last two weekends. The sunsets, the moon out during the day, and the stars at night…just incredible!

I’ve heard bears pulsing…didn’t see them though. I carry my bear spray at all times and I hope I never have to use it. I’ve hiked and it’s been great. I’ve seen plenty of chipmunks and even had two elk run past my campsite. Such a peaceful and serene place…especially at night when the OHV and dirt bikers sleep. But they are fine and very respectful. 

Repeat Visits

I’ve camped here a couple times and I absolutely love it. You’ll find the lake pretty soon after you’ve driven the gravel road for a few minutes where you can fish or just hang out. If you drive further up, you’ll find a nice variety of camping spots. My favorites are up towards the top. From what I’ve seen and experienced, most of not all spots are accessible by truck/suv/towing a trailer. My favorite part of this spot is the beautiful views and the breathtaking sunsets. And of course the stars. If you need food/supplies on the way or during your trip, Kamas is just a short drive out of camp and everything you need is in town.
