Accessible via gravel Forest Road 66, Fish Lake Campground sits at 6,990 feet elevation in Whitman National Forest above Halfway, Oregon. The US Forest Service facility charges $6 per night and operates from June through October, providing drinking water, vault toilets, and metal fire pits at developed sites. Campers can also find dispersed sites nearby along the access road, though these lack water hookups and feature rock fire rings instead.
The campground offers direct lake access for fishing, canoeing, and swimming, though water conditions can become muddy at times. Fall visitors encounter aspen groves throughout the area, while wildflowers bloom during summer months. For different elevation options, Twin Lakes Campground provides an alternative 2.8 miles northeast.
Description
The Fish Lake Campground is located adjacent to the picturesque Fish Lake in the Wallowa Mountains. As a high elevation campground visitors enjoy fishing, boating, and hiking at the nearby wildernes and non-wilderness trailheads. Six of the 21 tent/trailers sites have been constructed to accommodate persons with disabilities, and 6 sites on the upper loop are available for RV's longer than 20 feet. Considerations: Mosquitos! and dropping water levels in late summer.
