The Best Camping Near Kings Mountain, North Carolina

A lot of the amenities were built by the CCC, but many have not been maintained. The sites are pretty close together and some are not suitable for a camper over 24'. The cleanliness of the bathhouses depends on the host. I have seen very good and also pretty gross. This place is nicer than a lot of the private campgrounds around this area and has a lot of potential if they can get the funding.

Must have been a site to see

This place has not been kept up very well probably due to funding. The scenery is beautiful and is a must see; however, it does look pretty scary in some parts due to lack of care. The restroom aren't very clean as well but at least the plumbing works.

Potential

I expected a little more from this campground. The reviews I read made me think they had a lot to offer, but not so much. Stayed here April, 2018 for a week with my grandson. We were very disappointed to hear that they had kayaks, but weren't renting them out yet, due to not having a rack built for them yet. I assume so they couldn't lock them up. I thought they rented horses, but I misread the info..they had horse trails if you brought your own horse. The campsites are extrememly close together. The trails were nice. The camp store wasn't stocked the way you'd think it should be. I probably won't visit this campground again.

A little disappointed

King mountain state park is a nice affordable campground.  It has a number of campsites and it has a trail that you can walk from the state park to the National Park.  None of the campsites are paved so if it rains prepare for a muddy day. overall it is a quiet place to relax and enjoy with your family and friends.

Great Getaway Great History 

Large spacious spots for RVs and Tent campers. Close to Kings Mountain Military Park. Several trails from easy to strenuous and varying lengths. Lake with fishing, kayaking and canoing. Clean facilities with bathrooms, showers and camp store.

Spaces have electric, water, fire rings and picnic tables. Tent only areas.

I carefully scouted online and got a great site for our tent camping (wouldn’t have been great for RVs) but there were definitely some awful sites to be had. Restrooms were clean and well stocked. Nicely stocked store. Living history farm was disappointing - not much to look at and not enough signs.

Great campground with clean facilities and lots of amenities. Convenient country store at the park office. Hook ups for both RVs and tent campers. Sites are very close together.

We stayed in May for a weekend. It was full of people and kids. There were great trails for you and your pup's to go hiking on. The camp itself was clean and well maintained. I didn't use the restrooms as I was in an RV, so I cannot comment on those

At night quiet hours were kept and it was just beautiful!

Beautiful Getaway

I've visited twice now when a church group was having an event in the park. Our group rents out a group cabin area, complete with its own bathhouse &amp; kitchen-lodge.

The cabins themselves are rustic - one-room, with bunkbeds or cot-like beds, depending on your cabin. They've obviously been being used for years for school and scout groups, as they are covered in kids graffiti (mostly just names &amp; dates). I like the rustic cabin idea, but the screens in the cabin windows have badly needed repairs on both of my trips, so aside from mosquitos you end up contending with wasps too. The bathhouse is not well taken care of, &amp; the bathroom attached to the lodge/kitchen is disgusting. I suppose for the church's purposes, the price is good &amp; the area works. For a big group it's nice to have the whole area to ourselves.

Review of the Group Cabin Rentals

I haven’t been camping at many different places but this place had everything you need. Electricity, water and fire pit. Camp areas are kind of close together so there were a lot of other people around.  

Decent

The campground is nice and some sites have more room than others. Lots of clean bathrooms throughout the campground and park. Nice play area for kids. Good hiking. The rangers dropped off flyers on Friday night to let us know the events for the weekend at the military park (which were free events). Very pet friendly. 

Relaxing and beautiful

Camp grounds were not in great condition. Fire rings corroded. Sure we're to close to each other (RVs). Camp store attendant was rude. Hiking trails were really good. Well marked. Beautiful area.

Was only a 45 minute drive from my home growing up so went a lot on the weekends with my family. Hiking, biking, and relaxing! 

Great family spot 

Long weekend stay at site #42.  Nice level and large site.  Some sites are smaller and closer but our site and those on both sides of us were large and level.  Bathhouse by our site was kept clean and stocked well.  Small lake for fishing and they rent canoes and kayaks.  Lots of trails.  Equestrian camping area on the other side which we had no reason to visit.  
Update to this review ... second visit this time site 41 which again was a large site.  Unfortunately we had a severe storm second night there, our side had no damage but there were trees down all over the rest of the park.  Lost our electricity which means we lost water.  They locked all of the restrooms because of this and didn’t bother putting up any signs or provide any alternative for those who were in tents, which there was a significant amount of people.  since it was Memorial Day weekend the park was full.  We had our bathroom in our trailer and water in our holding tank but we felt bad for the people in pop ups and tents. Still had no electricity the next day and still no bathrooms so we decided to call the electric company and was told the address of the park was never logged as having outage!  Seriously?!!! Electric company sent workers out and later that day electricity was restored.  This park is poorly managed, it should not take a call from a camper to the electric company.  Following day they locked one of the bathrooms again because of a broken toilet until they could get it fixed, I understand that, but again no sign was posted ... just a locked door.  Overall we were very disappointed with the way the rangers handled things and won’t be going back any time soon.

Tons to do, including hikes and history. Make sure to go across the street to the Kings Mountain Military site. Better yet, plan your stay when they are doing an event. 

History Abounds

It's a very nice campground with very friendly people and nice trails around. The only issue which wasn't big for me due to tent camping, the sites looked washed out and very unlevel so depending on camper or RV might take some work getting level! 




Great place, but...

A fun place to take your travel trailer or RV for the weekend. Sites are large and plenty of space to spread out and enjoy with your pets. Campground store was well stocked with essentials including bundles of wood.

Pet & RV friendly

Lots of sites could use some attention. Tangled tree roots, water ruts. Muddy when it rains. They don’t put gravel often. It gets jam packed on the weekend. Staff isn’t terribly friendly. Lots of big group tent campers. Lots to do in the area. Very friendly squirrels.

Lots of trails to choose from. Beautiful views. Lots of history. Visit here often.

If you happen to have loud drunk neighbors, who party until 3:30 am, the hosts will not tell them to be quiet. Someone did call the sheriff, but no one came until 10 am the next morning. They woke the drunks up to tell them to be quiet, but they were allowed to stay in the park. I give it 2 stars because this is a beautiful park.

Took the new pop-up to Kings Mountain State Park this past weekend and had a great time. The sites are pretty close together, but we still had adequate room to spread out. Each site has water, 30 amp electric, a picnic table, and a fire pit ring. Our site was a pull-through, but the majority of them are back-in. Throughout the campground, AT&amp;T had great cell coverage, but Verizon was non-existent. Our site was a stone's throw from the bath/shower house, which was clean and recently updated. When not in the side, a short walk takes you to the Trading Post, a small store selling firewood ($7), ice, souvenirs, and sundries. Next to that is a large playground connected to a pavilion. A short 2 minute drive (or longer hike if you are feeling ambitious) takes you to the Kings Mountain Military Museum where you can learn of all things historical to Kings Mountain. There's a small model village and numerous other attractions to view while at the park as well. Overall this was a great experience. It's close to home for us, and the price was fantastic ($30 nightly). Let me know if you have any other questions!

Overall a Good Experience 

We stayed here for a weekend in March 2021 and were surprised at how much we liked it. There are lots of trails close to the campground with one around a lake and a stream off of it. Facilities were very well maintained. Only downside not all lots level and some stumps that were hard to manuver around to park and to leave spot.

Pleasantly Surprised

Sweet little 4 mile hike back to a primitive camping area. There is one designated area but we passed a few campsite scattered along other areas of the trail. The National park sits back-to-back with the state park and is joined by a nice trail. 

Kings mountain National military park

We went for a weekend with our grandsons. Due to our work schedule we arrived after the gate was locked-not a problem, but they do lock gates fairly early. 
The road in is quite narrow, and if you happen to meet another RV, someone will need to back up. The campsites are packed it really tight without many trees between them. 
We had a small pull through that worked fine for a weekend. Bathrooms were adequate. There’s a nice playground hiking trails and a small lake for paddling (no swimming). The park was quiet with many families camping there.
We will probably visit again but will go during the week to avoid some of the crowd.

Nice campground for hiking, historic buildings nearby and a great camp store. Lots of regulars it seems. Sites are close but not a negative. Lots of loud neighbors the weekend that we were there. Beautiful water areas, great places to take photographs lots of friendly people. Our site was private and not too far from the tent camping area. Bathrooms were nice and kept well.

Visited 10/4/2019

There are so many things to experience at or near this state park. My favorite section was the Living History Farm. There was also the old bath house at the lake, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Adjacent to the state park is King’s Mountain National Battlefield, so if you want things to do, there is no shortage if you like history, like to fish, and like to hike. However, my campsite was not favorable to tent campers. If you are in an RV or a travel trailer, it would be great, but the gravel is uncomfortable to sleep on unless you are sleeping on a cot. The bath house(the one not on the National Register), is air conditioned and modern. However, you will need to take your own towel if you want to wash your hands. I did not see any paper towels. With that said, the bath house was great. The office fits right in with the theme of history. It has a charming cottage feel to it, and it has an old gas pump from the 1930s(?) out front. You can rent boats and PFDs from there as well as get some basic supplies. Additionally, there is a volleyball area and a basketball goal for the young at heart. As I stated earlier, my favorite area was the Living History Farm. I had to restrain myself from including too many photos of it. Overall, this was a great experience for things to do, but staying in a tent there was not ideal.

History Lives in and near this State Park

We stayed for 2 weeks we love it there close to grocery stores ,gas,Starbucks but secluded the thing we don’t like is that internet is spotty in that area made it hard to work from home 

Kings mountain 

This is a very nice state park. The sites are well spaced and wooded. (If you think they are too close together you haven’t been to many private campgrounds).
Our site was level and spacious, although some were not as level. Our first site had an awkward incline. The guy at the trading post said they were working on them.
We were there mid-week and the campground was very quiet. The only noise was from crows and other birds, and acorns falling in the woods.
There is electric (some 50 amp) and water but no sewer. There are 2 dump stations. Several bathrooms/showers are available.
There is a nice playground, hiking trails, a lake, canoe rental, and a trading post with some food, ice, camping supplies, firewood and souvenirs.
There is also a separate Equestrian campground!
The stare park is adjacent to Kings Mountain National Battlefield Park, with Revolutionary War history and more hiking.

Nice quiet state park

I've been staying in this campground since I was a kid. It used to have put-put golf and you could swim in Crawford lake,  but it still has basketball, volleyball, boating, hiking, and plenty of camping. This Thanksgiving weekend, I along with my daughter, brother, and 3 nephews hiked the CCC trail to the Poplar trail and jumped on the national park trail to get to the national park backcountry camping spot, and stayed the night. There is plenty of water and downed trees for firewood. There is a ring of rocks for the fire ring. The GPS coordinates are, 35.120455,-81.406060 for the backcountry camping spot. There is another good one at 35.119412,-81.404258. Along the CCC trail, you can see the foundations and gate post for the old Conservation Camp founded after the great depression. The damn at Lake Crawford and the bathhouse were built by the CCC.

Great Park

Great all around experience. Myself,the wife and boys all had a great time. Bath houses were clean with no issues. Camping store was stocked with all your needs with a very nice associate. Definitely will be returning, hopefully in January after the holidays...

1st family tent camping trip

In full disclosure. We bought a camper and decided on this campground as our maiden voyage. It’s close to the dealer we bought the camper from, and had available sites on short notice.

We’ve tent camped here before and enjoyed our stay and will this time as well. 

I’ve never towed a camper before and I’m
still learning. Any sites that have a moderate slope can be a challenge. Especially to a newbie.

I’m this case we made it work using leveling chocks on one side of the camper. No complaints. We wish we made a better site selection that’s more level. Lol. 

A nice quiet place that’s well maintained, but with minimal amenities. We like the quiet and hiking trails and enjoy our stays here.

Nice!

They have two campgrounds, newest has 50amp service with sewer hook up and mostly drive thru campsites, but out in the open with no shade trees. Older campground is heavily wooded with beautiful forest and some sites have water frontage to tie up your boat. 30 amp service with no sewer, all sites are paved and pretty level. All the bath houses are nice and clean. Beautiful place to camp! One of our favorite places to camp!

Wonderful family campground 

We enjoyed this campground, but most sites were as close together as dome commercial/independent campgrounds that aside,the one recently remodeled facility was great, the other older facilities were a bit lacking. Sites were mostly not level, but also not too obtuse

Cell coverage not the greatest, but managed 6 or 7 meg down on Visible and T-mobile

Nice tree’d campground   Peaceful but close

Check in is at the trading post. They have a small amount of camping equipment but very little grocery items, mostly just snacks and coffee. WI-FI is available there. There are tables outside for you to use but if it's raining I suggest going to the shelter just up the hill,#2. You can get 2 bars there. Verizon was 1-2 bars depending on location. There was plenty of OTA TV channels. All of the bath houses were clean but the ones by sites 103 and 7 had been remodeled and had heat and hand dryers. The other two didn't appear to have heat and there was no hand dryers, so take a towel. Hand soap was available at all. Every site needs more gravel not only on the pad but around the picnic table. Many were like site 43 which had very little gravel so when it rains, you would be in mud. The dump stations also needs a lot more gravel. The second one from the campground was very muddy. Currently site 36 has a large mulch mound at the back. Sites 29 and 46 didn't have a cover for the electrical post. As previously stated, you must really check the site description or plan on bringing lots of levelers.  Most sites were shady.  There is NO privacy at any site but the worst were the ones next to pull-thru. The hiking trails were very well marked and maintained.

The grounds are pretty but needs at lot of updating

Large sites, mostly level, with table and fire ring. Decent bath/shower buildings. Large day use area with pavilions, tables, grills and playgrounds. Cute camp store. 

Big sites in the woods with water and electric

Lovely shaded campground. Boat rentals at Lake York. National Military Battlefield nearby. WiFi available at the Trading Post, but not at campsites. Some sites have cell service, site #48 does not for Verizon. Site #48 is not level but not bad. Park is tidy and clean. Quiet on a Wednesday.  

Meets standards

1st thing was i received an email telling me to check in at trading post and had the wrong address. we arrived as well as 2 other campers at the wrong address and then had to drive a mile or so to turn around. The trading post check in is in the campground!! 
The park is very pretty with all the trees, but the campsites themselves are very unlevel and laid out very awkwardly. The electric and water are in odd spots on each site. Luckily we were on one of the rare fairly level sites.
The road into the campground is narrow, hilly and windy. We were able to do it in our 32 foot class A, but luckily no one was coming the other direction. 
This would be a very nice park if they spent some money on the individual campsites.


needs some TLC

My husband and I come out to camp at kings mountain state park often and we love it if we decide to go camping or to go out to walk some trails with our dog this is the place we always come to the park rangers are all nice respectful and the keep the place clean and help to make your stay amazing. They also answer any questions you may have about the park like things to do while you are there and to enjoy your stay.

Amazing place to stay

I recently stayed for 3 nights with my popup in site#10.  The site is a good size for a tent or small camper only.  Overall we were surprised by the campground based on other reviews .  In my opinion The sites are close together, poorly maintained, and most are very small.  The Trading Post is nicely stocked, and open all day.  The bathrooms near my site were the best part…it was modern, clean and the showers were hot with good pressure.  But other than the bathrooms everything felt like it hadn’t been maintained at all. Won’t be coming back.

Disappointing 

Many camping sites are very much in need of leveling. Sites slope from left to right, front to back, and some slope in both ways. Some sites are listed as RV sites but are half as large as they need to be to accommodate a medium size RV. If that wasn't enough, sites are very close to each other and there are almost no plants other than tall trees to offer any privacy. SC Park system needs to take a serious look at making improvements.
