South Campground - Hosmer Lake (OR)

Within Deschutes National Forest, South Campground sits alongside Hosmer Lake, providing drive-in access for RVs up to 40 feet. The US Forest Service operates this established campground from mid-May through late September, with sites priced at $25-27 per night. Reservations open approximately six months in advance and fill quickly during peak season.

The campground spreads sites across both sides of the access road, with some positioned directly lakeside while others sit across from the water. Jereme M. notes that "sites across the road from the lake seemed a little less buggy." Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit with grill, though this is a dry camping facility without water hookups. Sites 13, 14, and 16 offer direct lake views, while sites 2 and 3 provide more spacious layouts with tree separation between neighbors.

Hosmer Lake draws paddlers with its clear water and submerged vegetation channels visible from kayaks and paddleboards. A boat ramp provides lake access, though campers should watch for leeches near the launch area. The lake supports a healthy trout population that swimmers and paddlers often spot beneath the surface. For those planning extended stays in the region, sites near Deschutes National Forest offer additional camping opportunities within the forest system.

Vault toilets serve the campground, and both campfires and pets are permitted throughout the facility.

Guests commonly noted the spacious, well-separated sites and beautiful lake access perfect for paddling. Booking requires advance planning as sites fill up quickly, and it's a dry camping facility.

Beautiful - Bring your kayak

We love Lake Hosmer, it is always beautiful in the summer.  The spaces are nice, although sometimes hard to get into you will need to book way in advance (they will release sites about 6 months early).  You can Kayak on the lake and there is also a boat ramp, store, and marina not too far down the road.

This facility has vault toilets and each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire pit with grill. This is a dry camping facility so bring it in and out.

Great Sites, Limited Availability

We had sites #2 and #3 and they were very spacious. each site had a fire pit and picnic table and trees separating is from our neighbors but a littleway ways from the water entrance. great for kids! if your want a site with a view of the water, try for 13,14 or 16.

Must See Paddling Destination

Homer lake is a beautiful lake to paddle in a Kayak or on a Paddle Board. extremely clear water, great sub-surface vegetation, channels to paddle through and abundant trout can be seen swimming beneath you. Camping spots are spread out nicely so not too much neighbor interaction. Just Beautiful!

Great spot for warm weather with the family!

We had a great time at this spot, rolled in on Friday afternoon and found a spot. Sites across the road from the lake seemed a little less buggy. The lake is great for paddling but be aware of leeches around the boat launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a difference between Hosmer Lake Campground and South Campground at Hosmer Lake?

South Campground is the primary developed campground at Hosmer Lake, so the names are often used interchangeably. The campground contains numbered sites (including popular lakeside sites #13, #14, and #16, plus spacious sites #2 and #3). Sites are thoughtfully arranged to provide privacy while still offering access to the lake. Reservations are highly recommended as this is a popular destination, especially during summer months. The reservation system typically opens about six months in advance.

Is there a day use area at Hosmer Lake separate from the campground?

Yes, Hosmer Lake has a day use area that includes a boat launch for non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. This area is perfect for experiencing the lake's crystal-clear waters, abundant trout, and beautiful sub-surface vegetation without staying overnight. The lake is especially popular for paddling through its scenic channels. Day visitors can enjoy wildlife viewing and fishing while exploring the lake. For those planning just a day trip, this access point provides all you need to enjoy Hosmer Lake's natural beauty.

How do I get to Hosmer Lake Campground in Oregon?

Hosmer Lake Campground is located in Central Oregon near the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. To reach the campground, take the Cascade Lakes Highway (Century Drive/Route 46) southwest from Bend. The campground is situated approximately 30 miles from Bend. Follow signs for Hosmer Lake, and you'll find the turn-off from the main highway. The access road leads directly to the campground and boat launch area. During winter months, the road may be closed due to snow, so check seasonal access before planning your trip.

What amenities and facilities are available at Hosmer Lake Campground?

Hosmer Lake Campground offers basic but comfortable amenities. Each site includes a fire pit and picnic table, with trees providing natural separation between campsites. The campground features multiple sites with varying proximity to the water, some offering views of the lake. Facilities are typical of a more rustic forest service campground. A boat launch area is available for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. While the campground itself has limited amenities, there is a marina and store not far from the main camping area where visitors can find additional supplies.
