National Forest

Deschutes & Ochoco National Forests & Crooked River National Grassland

The lake was formed about 20,000 years ago when rising magma-encountered groundwater resulting in violent steam explosions. The resulting explosions formed a broad shallow crater, which later filled with water. The lake covers an area of 99 acres with average depth of 33 feet with a maximum depth of 58 feet. South Twin Lake is a lure's toss from the Deschutes arm of Wickiup Reservoir and less than a mile south of North Twin lake. Motorized boats are prohibited on this body of water. Great Little Campground

Not a huge campground, easy access to South Twin Lake which is a premier lake for kayaks, paddle boards as powered boats are not allowed. Hard to find anything randomly showing up as I think you have to reserve everything online now. Right next door is a resort that you can walk in and check out the little store along with restaurant. You can even eat lunch on the patio right on the lake. There is also about a 1 mile trail that goes around the lake.
