Natural Features

The reservoir covers an area on the Deschutes River that was historically used by Native Americans during the fall. Several tribes throughout the area built "wickiups," shelters made from reeds, grass, or brush, while living in the area. At full pool, Wickiup is a beautiful, pine-edged reservoir, with some willows and sandy beach areas. At low water, steep soil and gravel banks drop abruptly to the water. Wetlands, diverse forests, and rocky slopes near the campground provide a necessary habitat for shorebirds, porcupine, deer, bats and the occasional black bear.

Lava Lands Visitor Center in nearby Bend, Oregon, is a great starting point for visitors to learn about the diverse landscape and history of the area through interpretive programs and exhibits. Pleasant stay

Spacious campsite. Arrived late so we didn't get to be right by the lake but it was just a short walk away. Make sure you bring money to pay for showers. Camp host was very helpful.

Enjoyable

We took our first camping trip here as a couple and in 20 years it was easy to reserve and the campsite was clean and flat. It was a great time. Tmobile coverage was poor but we found a spot nearby where we could connect. The campsite was almost too quiet and we were concerned about disturbing our neighbors but we spent most of our time exloring so it worked out. Overall a very satisfying time. Will come back.

Chipmunk paradise

Another overnight at a great fishing location. Wife I set up a little later in the day and weren't able to get one of the prime spots facing the lake but oh well. We were right by the restrooms so score?

The lake is small enough that a hike around it would only take 1-1.5 hours I would think. I was able to walk the full length while fishing and it took not much longer than that. The lake is around 50ft deep, so much deeper than you would expect from something so small. The shore had a very steep drop off. A float tube would kill at this lake. I was able to pull only 1 very small rainbow out but 1 is better than none.

Great facilities, beautiful area. Chipmunks DO NOT care what you are doing they only want your food. Not scared at all of humans. There were a few loud families around but what can you do. We still had fun and were able to call my mom.and wish her happy birthday.

Would do it again if we didn't have camping locations list a mile long.

A great little campground!

Nice place for the night! The two smaller lakes were great for kayaking and fly fishing on! There is a nice store at the campground across the road and the camp has fire rings, wooden tables and drinking water. Cold showers are free and hot showers are $1.50. Laundry machines close by. We tent camped and the fire was a nice place to be in the evenings and mornings, as it was plenty cool. The whole lake is surrounded by a beach and a gravel road. Dispersed camping (free) is available around the lake down from the campground but $5 a night was worth it for amenities.

Quiet Little Spot on a Quiet Little Beach

This is a small campground on the Wickiup Reservoir. It has two loops, and the smaller loop dead ends at a large quiet spot (or 2) with a quick trail to the water. Big, flat campsites have picnic tables and fire rings, with nearby restrooms and dishwashing stations. Many are surrounded by tall trees, but 12 & 13 get a lot of sun the afternoon.

The best part of this spot is the beautiful, sandy beach down a short trail. We set up chairs and a canopy and stayed by the water all day. It's great for swimming & kayaks & paddleboards & floaties. There were also some people camped ON the beach further up, but that might be dispersed camping rather than a reservable spot.
