Fremont National Forest holds Mud Creek Campground within its southeastern reaches, a free, drive-in site managed by the US Forest Service outside Lakeview in Lake County, Oregon. The campground runs roughly ten sites, open June through October, with fire rings, vault toilets, large picnic tables, and a manual water pump that operates only during the season. Sites vary between pine needle floors and patches of tall grass, and the overall maintenance level is modest.
Mosquitoes are a significant factor here, particularly in early summer. One camper reported being driven out despite using repellent spray, so early June visits carry real risk if you spend time outside. By August, the water levels drop and the creek or lake that gives the campground its name may be dry. The site layout is wooded and private, but tree canopy along the access road is low, and at least one reviewer towing a 30-foot trailer reported roof damage from overhanging branches. Rigs longer than 30 feet should approach with caution.
The road in is paved and well-maintained, making navigation straightforward. The campground sits close to Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, which gives it value as a base for visiting that area. For a different experience in the same national forest, Drake Peak Lookout is a few miles northeast and provides an elevated alternative worth considering.
