Camping opportunities around Chesterland, Ohio range from established state parks to privately operated campgrounds within a short drive. The region includes several developed options like Punderson State Park Campground, which accommodates tents, RVs, and glamping, and West Branch State Park Campground, offering year-round access approximately 30 miles southeast. Campgrounds in the area typically feature electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings, with varying levels of privacy between sites. The Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA provides cabin rentals in addition to traditional camping, while smaller facilities like Penitentiary Glen Reservation Campsite offer more rustic experiences with fewer amenities.

Seasonal considerations strongly influence camping experiences in northern Ohio. Most campgrounds operate from April through October, with limited winter camping available at select locations like Punderson and West Branch State Parks. Reservations are highly recommended, particularly for summer weekends and holiday periods when waterfront sites fill quickly. Access to most campgrounds involves paved roads suitable for all vehicles, though some primitive sites may require short walks from parking areas. Weather patterns can bring significant rainfall in spring and occasional summer storms. One visitor noted, "The campground is busy and very popular but the crew is super efficient at checking in campers, answering questions and especially maintaining the grounds."

Lakefront and water-adjacent sites consistently receive the highest ratings from campers visiting the area. Several campgrounds offer direct access to lakes, ponds, or reservoirs, providing opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and swimming during warmer months. Sites with water views tend to book earliest, especially those with full hookups. Punderson State Park features a glacial lake, while West Branch offers multiple recreation opportunities on Kirwan Reservoir. Sites vary in privacy levels, with some offering wooded separation and others arranged in more open layouts. According to one camper who stayed at West Branch State Park, "A very quiet park that is well-maintained with lots of amenities. Even the rumbling of the nearby trains was on the quiet side!" Visitors frequently mention clean facilities and well-maintained grounds as highlights of their experiences at established campgrounds in the region.

      Roundup Lake RV Resort

      Sites close together

We didn’t engage in the many things to do. We are using it as a base camp to go to a Guardians game, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
On the weekend when it was pretty full, it was tight quarters and this you can hear lots of people. We kinda gave up having a quiet night and went inside the camper. Now it is not the weekend and very few people around. Seasonal are all together, transients grouped together. Did get Hershey’s ice cream at their arcade.

      Silver Springs Campground

      Beautiful peaceful campground

We paid $25 for the night and it was definitely worth it! Beautiful grassy area with spacious sites. There were clean porta potties, potable water, dump stations, and also a working restroom but we didn’t try it so not sure what that was like. Great cell service and data connection. Only ~15 minutes drive from Cuyahoga! Overall lovely campsite would 100% recommend!

      Punderson State Park Campground

      Quiet and Lush

Our site was level, although I observed many that are not. It was fairly quiet, although the sites are pretty small. Ours was described as 'waterfront', but it was so overgrown between the site and the shoreline that there was no access and the lake wasn't visible. Bathrooms were very clean and the shower worked great.

      Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

      Relaxing and peaceful

Mosquito Lake gets a bad rap because of its name. We had such a great time launching our kayak from our campsite! I’ve attached a highlighted map marked with the sights on or very close to the water to launch a kayak. Additional kayak launch sites available around the park if you can’t get one of these. It’s great campground if you have kids or a dog. Plenty of great playgrounds and a dog park/dog beach. The camp host was very nice and welcoming. The wash house has laundry and showers. Everything was clean.

      Perry Township Park

      Great view of Lake Erie!

Gated and private campground. You can come and go as you please 24/7 with a gate card. Secure and clean bathrooms. Laundry room. Camp store and more. Wi-Fi is available. But the view on being right on lake Erie is the best. It's a must campground, at least once.

      Perry Township Park and Campground

Another pleasant stay at this campground! We had made our reservations online prior to our stay and the process was super easy. And as always, the campground host was very friendly and helpful. Unlike a lot of city parks I've been to, this one is behind a gate and the showers/restrooms have codes you're provided with during check-in, so that helps keep things safe, quiet, and clean. I still haven't used the showers here, but the separate restrooms were spotless. The park itself is nice and was busy with families enjoying outdoor activities. Everyone was also respectful during quiet hours.

      Silver Springs Campground

      Nice local park

Nice place to stay for the weekend. Inexpensive. No water hookups at the individual sites but potable water is available in the park. The downsides are the sights can get muddy if there is rain. Only portapotties nearby.

We had big storms roll through when we were there. Unfortunately a large branch broke off of a nearby tree and hit the engine hood of our RV and dented it in several places. It could have been much worse though and not the park’s fault. Could happen anywhere there are trees.

      Shenango Recreation Area Campground

      Great clean place

Came tent camping here. Stayed on new duck loop, which from the looks of all the other sites, this one seemed more open, less R. V. Campers. Plenty of open spots even for the weekend. Place is clean, well kept, bathrooms are clean which is a plus. All the sites around have decent space between them. Close access to a lake. You can bring your boat

      Headwaters Park

      Campsite A

Had a nice stay at the Camp Site A tent site, which they label as their ADA Accessible site.

Overall me and the kids had a really nice time hanging atbthe site and exploring around the lake. Lots of friendly people too.

      Pros:

      • Tent site was generally good with a picnic table and fire pit on-site
      • Pull in parking right next to the campsite (which seems to be true for all tents and leantos)
      • Great walkable area with lots to explore with the kids
      • A few nice things just a 10min drive away like the Eagle Park splash park and playground and the cute Burton town square.
      • Tons of birds for all my bird watchers
      • Right at the entrance to the tent site area and right next to the restrooms
      • Sometimes people bring horses down there for a walk
      • Can't see other campers tent from your site (which i like because Im out here to get away from people)

      Cons:

      • Being right next the restrooms and tent area entrance is a higher traffic area. Didn't bother us much but could get annoying if woken up by a late night driver or door slam
      • The stump on the tent site has a snake in it. Didn't bother us at all, only saw it once as it was slithering away, but thought other might like to know.
      • Toilet was out of hand sanitizer

      FAQ:

      • No electic
      • No plumbing or showers (it is basically an outhouse)

    Guide to Chesterland

Camping spots near Chesterland, Ohio provide access to northeast Ohio's glacial landforms, with many sites situated around kettle lakes formed thousands of years ago. The region sits at approximately 1,250 feet above sea level, creating distinct seasonal camping conditions with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F during peak camping months. Local campgrounds range from basic tent sites with limited amenities to full-service RV parks within 30 miles of Chesterland.

    What to do

Disc golf courses: Punderson State Park Campground offers an 18-hole disc golf course accessible to campers. "The camp is beautiful. Opportunities for disc golf, archery range, canoeing/kayaking/row boats, swimming (no lifeguard) and golf," notes Rebecca G., highlighting the variety of activities available at Punderson State Park Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds feature fishing ponds or lake access. At Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA, campers can enjoy catch-and-release fishing. "Nice pool and catch and release fishing pond. Great camp store with a book exchange bookcase," writes Rae Ann P., describing the amenities that make this KOA appealing for anglers.

Hiking trail access: Many campgrounds connect to trail systems. "There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. Bridal trails are located on Esworthy Rd," shares Alisa G. about the outdoor exploration possibilities at West Branch State Park. The diverse trail system accommodates different hiking abilities, with some trails suitable for families with young children.

Kayaking and water sports: Lakefront campgrounds provide water recreation options. "We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite," explains a West Branch State Park camper, describing how direct water access enhances camping experiences. Rental options are also available at select parks for those without personal equipment.

    What campers like

Private, wooded sites: Many campers appreciate secluded camping spots with natural barriers. "The sites are pretty far apart and you feel secluded but, at the same time, the bathrooms are close by," notes Jenny K. about West Branch State Park Campground, describing the balance between privacy and convenience.

Waterfront views: Lakeside camping consistently receives positive feedback. "Great site! Shades lots of space semi private area. Right off the water with area to tie boat for easy water access," says Katelyn P. about her West Branch State Park experience. Waterfront sites typically require reservations months in advance, especially during summer weekends.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathhouses and amenities receive frequent praise. "Very clean and well maintained. KOA Bath house trailer was very clean, easy to utilize the outdoor kitchen," reports Heidi C. about the Silver Springs Campground, highlighting how facility quality impacts overall camping experiences.

Dog-friendly options: Several campgrounds accommodate pets with dedicated spaces. "Great dog park with a swimming beach for dogs only. Fun to watch them play even if you don't have a dog," writes Judy F. about Silver Springs Campground, noting the specialized pet amenities available.

    What you should know

Site levelness varies significantly: Many campgrounds in the region feature uneven terrain. "The sites greatly vary on size and flatness so make sure you look at the pictures of the site before you book some are basically the parking pad and a fire ring, some are big and flat some are on an incline," advises Joe I. about Penitentiary Glen Reservation Campsite, emphasizing the importance of researching specific sites before booking.

Summer weekends fill quickly: Reservations are essential, particularly for preferred sites. "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" warns a West Branch State Park camper, stressing the competition for prime locations during peak season.

Weather preparedness: The region experiences variable conditions, even in summer. "We stayed overnight and arrived after a big storm passed through. Our grassy site had some muddy spots, but the site was big enough that we were able to avoid the mud," shares Karla J.B. about Silver Springs Campground, describing how site selection can mitigate weather challenges.

Limited winter options: Most campgrounds operate seasonally. Those open year-round often reduce services during winter months, with water systems winterized and fewer staff on-site.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. "There is a very nice playground and cute camp store. A good amount of secluded and shaded sites," mentions Daniel U. about his family's stay at Punderson State Park, noting amenities that appeal to families with young children.

Educational opportunities: Nature centers and ranger programs enhance family camping experiences. "Would have given this site 5 stars but the walk to the site was a bit more of a haul than expected. It was just myself, kids, and pup. So it made setting up camp a bit more work but we enjoyed our stay thoroughly. Its like you have the forest to yourselves out here," shares Jillian E. about Perry Township Park, highlighting the trade-off between accessibility and seclusion.

Beach access considerations: Swimming areas provide family recreation options but vary in quality. "The camper beach was small but nice and clean. We also took the inflatable kayaks out on the lake twice and it was so smooth and clear," reports Andrea F. about her family's experience, describing water recreation options that appeal to children.

Evening activities: Some campgrounds offer organized events for families. "An ice cream social is held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend," mentions a West Branch camper, describing programming that appeals specifically to families with children.

    Tips from RVers

Electric service limitations: Several campgrounds offer limited amperage options. "Very few full hookups. Rest of the sites only have 15-20 amp service. The lots are not even close the level. You will need a lot of blocks to get close to level," cautions Coy about Punderson State Park, noting infrastructure limitations that affect RV camping.

Site dimensions: Some campgrounds have tight spacing that affects larger RVs. "If you have awnings or slides, you will have to be careful about what site you will get or you will not be able to open the slides or your awning," warns Greg A. about specific site constraints at Punderson, emphasizing the importance of researching site dimensions before arrival.

Water filling challenges: Water access points can present logistical issues. "First the water fill is on an incline so when our tank was 'full' pulling away from fill station it was really only 2/3 full. This was okay for a short weekend but not good planning from who ever designed the park," notes Andrea F. about Nelson-Kennedy Ledges Quarry Park, describing infrastructure issues that affect RV camping.

Leveling requirements: Many RV sites require substantial leveling equipment. "We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches," explains an RVer at Nelson-Kennedy Ledges, detailing the practical challenges of setting up at uneven sites.
