At $10 per night on an honor system, Parkhurst Campground operates without reservations: campers arrive, choose an open site, and submit payment at the entrance. The campground sits alongside Pipestem Lake within the Pipestem Recreation Area, roughly five miles off Highway 281 from Jamestown. Sites are unnumbered and spread across a large, open area with dividing roads and scattered trees, running from a slightly elevated northern end down to a lower, lakeside southern section.
The trail network draws consistent attention from visitors. The area encompasses about 140 acres and includes the 5.5-mile North Ridge Trail, the 8-mile Pipestem Creek Trail, and equine trails with dedicated corrals and trailer space. Both the North Ridge and Pipestem Creek trails accommodate mountain biking and hiking, covering open prairie sections as well as wooded stretches. One caveat worth noting: the trails double as a cross country race venue at times, which has brought buses and spectators into the campground without advance notice to campers already on-site.
Facilities are basic. Vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, non-potable water, and a dump station are available. No hookups. Firewood is sold at a neighboring farm along the access road. The campground tends to stay quiet outside of holiday weekends, and reviewers consistently note well-maintained grounds. Nearby options include Pipestem Creek Dispersed -- Pipestem Recreation Area and Jamestown ND Dam for campers who want alternatives in the area. Tick checks are worth adding to your post-hike routine, particularly in summer.
