Quiet enough that coyotes calling across the water are the main nighttime disturbance, Strawberry Lake sits within North Dakota State Forest Service land in the Turtle Mountains north of campgrounds around Bottineau. Sites are on the small side, though a few can accommodate larger tents or a camper, and the lake itself stays free of motorized boats, which keeps conditions calm for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing from shore or a small craft.
Anglers should know there are only two spots along the lake suitable for fishing. The water supply comes from a hand pump on site and, as at least one camper has noted, it tastes unfiltered, making it better suited for washing dishes than drinking. Bring your own potable water. Erica S. describes the setup as "small but clean beach area, pump water, fairly clean toilet, tables, firewood, and garbage can," which covers the essentials without overstating them. Firewood is provided free to registered campers, and over 16 miles of trails with posted maps give hikers options beyond the lakeshore.
The campground sees light use. One visitor in late summer found only one other camp occupied. Nearby, Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground draws larger crowds, making Strawberry Lake a lower-traffic alternative in the same general area. The overnight fee is $15, payable in cash, so come prepared.
