Winngray Family Campground

The sound of Jonathan Creek runs continuously through this privately owned campground, where tent sites line the water's edge while over 100 RV sites occupy the interior areas. Winngray Family Campground operates year-round along the creek between Waynesville and Maggie Valley, with tent camping concentrated in a designated area that provides more spacing than the closer-together RV sections. Most RV sites include full hookups with water, electric, and sewer connections.

Creek-side tent sites offer fire rings and picnic tables, though campers should note that not all tent sites include these amenities. The tent area requires a 0.3-mile walk on paved roads to reach the bathhouse, which reviewers consistently describe as very clean with hot showers. Several campers mention the creek's trout fishing opportunities, and the constant water flow helps mask road noise for those camping near the water.

The campground maintains a leash-required policy for pets and hosts a mix of seasonal RV campers alongside overnight visitors. Staff members receive frequent praise for their helpfulness and willingness to accommodate late arrivals. "The campground is very well maintained and clean," notes Katrin M.. The location provides convenient access to campgrounds around Maggie Valley and serves as a base for exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park's Cataloochee Valley section.

This setup works best for RV campers seeking full hookups and tent campers who prioritize creek access over extensive recreational amenities.

Many campers appreciated the clean facilities, friendly staff, and peaceful creek-side tent sites. Several guests observed that it's primarily an RV park with close sites, though the creek location offers tranquil sounds that mask road noise.

Maggie Valley Splendor

A very clean commercial campground. Many RVers are semi-permanent in season and very friendly. Full RV services at site, 50 amp, sewer and water. Sits on a beautiful fishable river and is close to Maggie Valley and Waynesville. Very clean bathrooms and friendly helpful staff. Sites are close to others but not jammed together like others in area.

So Beautiful!

I don’t even know where to begin in describing how great this campground was. First off, the staff were so friendly and helpful, the grounds and bathhouse were extremely clean and the campsite was extremely comfortable. We camped by the river without an electric hookup and it was so perfect. The rushing water sound was extremely peaceful.

Tents have the best sites!

Had a great spot with my rooftop tent by the creek. Quiet and cool. Clean showers. Not too far off the interstate.

Very clean and pretty campground

We camped here over the weekend with our dogs. We were in the designated tent area, which was right on Jonathan creek. Our campsite had a firepit and a small picnic table on a platform. The tents had to be in grass. To the bathroom it was a little walk on a paved road. The bathhouse was very clean with nice hot showers. The campground is very well maintained and clean. The camp host was extremely friendly. If you have dogs you absolutely have to keep them on a leash otherwise you receive a nice reminder 😉. I have the feeling it's more of an RV park. They are all very close together. The tent area was much more spacious. It's a very short drive to the town of Waynesville and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The area is just very pretty and has a lot to offer for outdoor people.

Winngray for the win

This place and the woman who run it are great! We called on the day of and were able to secure two primitive campsites right next to each other with a great view along the river. She even brought us firewood after showing us our spot.

The RV campers were very nice and welcoming. There were several dogs and all of them were friendly. Our campsite had a fire ring and a picnic table with a wooden platform with a grill on it.

This spot is also pretty close to Waynesville. Grocery Stores are 10 minutes away, plus plenty of restaurants and even a couple breweries.

Our campsite was one of the farthest options from the bathrooms which was a 0.3 mile walk but it really didn’t feel far at all. It was flat and paved the whole way. The bathrooms themselves were very clean! There are multiple showers and toilets.

Overall, we loved this place! Would definitely recommend it for an RV or a tent camper.

Very clean

This camp ground was super clean and very well taken care of. The women on the camp ground was wonderful, we had gotten there after dark because of thanksgiving traffic and she waited up for us to get our site. The only reason I’m giving it a four star instead of five is because we like to tent camp and over the tent grounds there was a bright light that wouldn’t turn off. Definitely more of an RV place but still very nice.

Great Campground for RVs and Great Views for Tents

I had wanted to stay at this campground for several years, and I finally got the opportunity to do so. It looked inviting every time I passed by it. When I looked on the website, it showed tent sites, but most of the sites are for RVs. I was surprised to see that the best sites are along Jonathan Creek. These do not have water or electricity, but that didn’t matter to me. There are tent sites that have water and electricity, but they are behind the office, which is part of the main building. I am guessing that there are well over 100 RV sites. Most sites(if not all) have water, electricity, and sewer hookups. There are not many tangible amenities; there is no pool or playground, basketball court, etc. However, this campground is all about location. Not too far from the campground is Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Hemphill Bald(mountain and trail), the Cataloochee Divide Trail, and the natural beauty of the mountains. There is also Jonathan Creek, which is known for trout fishing. The tent sites along the creek are beautifully arranged in a line with enough space not to be crowded. Unfortunately, most of them do not have fire rings, but I found one at T5 that did have. I am guessing that the picnic tables at the entrance to the tent sites are for the tents since only one or two tent sites had picnic tables and it is close to the end of the season. My favorite part about the tent sites is that you can sit facing the creek and look at the mountains in the background, although you will see a few houses in the mountains. Another advantage of the tent sites by the creek is that you hear the creek all night long, which drowns out any road noise. This campground is privately owned and not part of a franchise. It is good to see that they still welcome tent campers.
