About

Overview
Stony Fork, tucked in a dense forest setting, is located at the foot of Big Walker Mountain beside the Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway. The East Fork of Stony Fork Creek winds through the campground, providing a serene setting for trout fishing and water play for visitors at the welcoming campground. The 1 mile Stony Fork Nature Trail takes campers through groves of pine and hardwoods, and the campground loop road makes for a scenic walk, too.
Recreation
The Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway is an incredible drive for viewing blooms of rhododendron, azalea and mountain laurel in spring, and fiery red and gold foliage in fall. Scenic overlooks highlight views of Mount Rogers and many ridges and valleys. A horseshoe pit at the campground provides hours of fun for families. Experienced hikers love the Seven Sisters Trail, approximately 5 miles, which leads from the campground to the top of Little Walker Mountain, then onto the Scenic Byway.
Facilities
Volunteer hosts are on hand to answer questions and make campers feel welcome. Campsites are ideal for both RV and tent camping. Warm showers and flush toilets are available, plus parking spurs are paved. Most sites come with electric hookups.
Natural Features
Stony Fork sits in a valley of the Appalachians at a 2,400 foot elevation. Its creekside setting provides a peaceful soundtrack of running water. In springtime, wildflowers and rhododendron dot the region with spectacular colors, and fall is reliably scenic with its red and yellow foliage.
Nearby Attractions
Stony Fork is in a natural forest setting at the foot of Big Walker Mountain and adjacent to the Big Walker Scenic Byway. The East Fork of Stony Fork Creek winds through the campground and provides water play and trout fishing. A one-mile nature trail will take campers through stands of pine and hardwoods, while the campground loop road itself is popular with walkers. For the more experienced hiker, Seven Sisters Trail leads from the campground to the top of Little Walker Mountain and back to the Scenic Byway. Within 10 miles of the campground, hike the popular Appalachian Trail, which extends more than 2,175 miles throughout the Appalachian Mountains across 14 states. It is the first trail designated as a National Scenic Trail.__ There is an outdoor shooting range a few miles from the campground.

4.8 stars
The sites are spaced perfectly, the forest is beautiful, and the creek is super clear and clean. Our site (44) is great, right by the trail and creek. Super nice hosts and everyone we met was friendly. Very quiet place. No playground or extras, but our boys didn't mind- the creek was great and the whole place is paved so it was great for scooters. It's a 3/4 mile loop around the campground. Great place!
Nice location
We stayed at campsite 6, beautiful location on the river, not much space in between campsites and we were robbed on our last night there. Other than that we had a good experience, just make sure you lock things in your car or have them in your tent/RV.
Quiet and Wonderful!
I love this little campground! Clean facilities, excellent camp hosts that are super helpful, a small trail to explore, a creek that goes through the campground, and lots of quiet. Very good Verizon signal as well!
Amazing National Forest Campground
Very nice wooded and private camp sites. Driveway is level and paved. Some sites are first come first serve and a few you can reserve. Some sites have electric and water however cannot hook up water to campers.

Great Weekend Stay
Stayed 2 nights back in September 2019. Site 33 was nice and quite private. Trails nearby for a quick hike. Only minor complaint was bugs in the bathhouse. Not horrible, but just enough to annoy. Hey it's camping not condo rental. Would recommend traveling through or weekend getaway.
nice and quiet
This was a nice, quiet campground. The sites were spread out from each other and were private. The bathrooms were clean. The camp host directed us to where we could buy firewood. The wood was dry and seasoned, and the gentleman gave us some sites to check out. Definitely will come back again.
Awesome find!
We were just looking for a place to stay the night in our Subaru. This was the place we landed on and we could not have been happier with our choice. Our site was plenty private. And we heard the creek all night. The bathrooms were super clean. We would definitely stay here again. We have AT&T and had service.
Beautiful, Quiet Campground
This was our first stay in VA and we couldn't have been happier with our choice of campground!! The sites are actually dispersed (unlike some campgrounds that claim to be, but aren't) and you have privacy. They are pet friendly for campers/RV's!! We stayed in site 44 and LOVED it!! Close enough to the bathrooms that we just used those and showered in there as well! The only thing we would have changed was the fire pit. We wish it would've been bigger, but it got the job done.

Quiet spot
Nice level spots with great hookups. Very quiet. Close to highway and easy dump station/water station across the street.
Nice National Forrest Campground
Easy access off of interstate. Nice wooded, mostly private campsites. Smaller campground with less than 50 sites I believe, because of this it was fairly quiet. We tent camped, but mostly others were in RVs. Good sized pull in/ back in sites for large RVs. Clean bathrooms for a Nat Forrest (I’ve stayed in some NF campgrounds that were not as clean and kept up on a daily basis). Fair amount of stuff to do in area, close to WV areas around New River, Bluestone National Rivers, and several state parks in VA and WV. Would stay at again!!
Great Quiet Relaxing
We camped here this past weekend. This is a great area with lots to do - hiking, beautiful views, historic Wytheville. We were in site 10. Nice site with your own private field. We had our grand-dog with us and she had a blast playing ball. Sites are electric ONLY. No water or sewer available. Even though reservation folks said otherwise. Local hosts were super friendly and helpful. We had a great quiet relaxing weekend.

Not the Best, Not the Worst
Most of the campsites can accommodate larger rigs. There’s very easy access off the interstate. We stayed in campsite 5, “beside” the creek. The site was one of the more private ones, with a good sized flat area. There was no access really to the creek, unless you walked up the road to the bridge.
There’s very little to do at the campground. There is a nature trail located on the campground, and the Seven Sisters Trail goes by the campground as well.
We visited in July, and it was very hot and crowded.
If you are content to go someplace, park your camper, and hang out at the campsite the entire time I’m sure it would be a nice place to visit. But if you are more like me, and like to hike, fish, bike, etc. this probably isn’t the place for you. While it wasn’t a bad place, I don’t see myself returning here.
The only reason I’m giving this campground a 3 is because of the ease of accessibility.
Quiet night in the forest
On our way back from Maumee we needed a break from the drive. This campsite was perfect. Cool and quiet. Most of the campsites are roomy, shady and well-equipped. Stony Fork Creek flows through the middle of the campsite, and the bridges are marked with a flood scale, so avoiding this place during heavy rains might be advised. There was firewood stacked up at each site, so we got a nice fire going until the rain came. I really enjoyed how quiet it was. The county road was close by but carried very little traffic. We will be back whenever in the area. Many of the sites have water/elec.
AT base camp
Great campground, nice camping lots and well maintained. Camp Hosts were very helpful. Loved our site #27. Close to the stream. Wooded, lots of space, large tent space. Had plenty of down wood for fires. Facilities were clean and well kept, however the showers only had water while you pressed the button in. Made it a little tough to get your backside rinsed.
Used this as our base camp while hiking the Appalachian Trail. Will be back!

Campground is suitable for the largest of rigs
I'm not positive what size rig this campground says can be here, but the biggest of big would be able to navigate the roads and the sites are wide or long or both. There's only one pull-through (#7) which is a 135 foot long pull through and is super nice with the creek babbling below. But most of the sites are really nice. There's a short 1 mile walk through the woods which is lovely. We were there in Nov and it was mostly empty except for the full-hookup sites on the other end of the campground. Some sites are full hookup, some have no hookups. We had electricity. The full sites can be reserved (I think). The dump is across the main road and easy to navigate. You can stay up to 21 days. Bring firewood and small bills to pay as camp host has nothing. Bathrooms were flush toilets and clean. There was one shower in the bathroom closest to us. Didn't check the others. Would definitely stay again.

Very Green!
This National Forest CG is located only 4 miles from I-77 (left from exit 47) and has paved roads and sites. About half of the 50 sites don’t have facilities but about a dozen have W/E (30A) while the other dozen have just electric hookup. We had site 11 which was electric only (30A). We knew this ahead of time so our fresh water tank was full. Luckily, we got sat dish tv reception in this wooded environment. The tree branches along the road in the cg could use a good trim in a couple of places.
