    Whipoorwill Campground

    Welcoming / Outdoors

Owners that we spoke with to reserve our area and take care of us was just the southern hospitality you always hear about. Super nice and welcoming and always has a smile on their face. The owners live on the property in the house, which I thought was awesome in case we needed anything. Everyone else that either drives by or lives by us always waving and stopping for conversations, just as polite as can be.

Was told this land is approximately 400 acres of wooded and fielded areas housing multiple horses and horse pastures. They have a horse arena here that holds events weekly. Love the horse atmosphere and watching them do their thing from day to day. Plenty of paths and areas to walk around and stretch your legs, along side multiple ponds with catch and release only fishing. Well off the main road as well so you hardly hear any traffic.

The whole place is so very clean: the bathrooms, camping areas, swimming pool area, even the dumpsters area. The grass is very well kept, the roads and signage, well maintained.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: During peak equestrian event weekends, campgrounds fill quickly. Advance bookings are essential, particularly for sites with full hookups or proximity to riding facilities.

Pet policies: While both major equestrian campgrounds welcome pets, rules regarding leashing, waste cleanup, and restricted areas vary. Check specific guidelines when booking.

Seasonal considerations: Summer humidity can be challenging for both horses and riders. Spring and fall offer more comfortable conditions for extended trail riding sessions in the Burgaw region.

Accessibility variations: Access types differ between properties. Some areas require walking from parking areas to campsites, while others offer direct drive-up access. Those with mobility concerns should confirm site-specific accessibility details.

Tips for camping with families

Arena viewing opportunities: Children can watch horse events from designated spectator areas at Whipoorwill's arena. These regular gatherings provide educational exposure to equestrian activities.

Fishing for beginners: The catch-and-release ponds offer low-pressure fishing experiences appropriate for young anglers. Bring light tackle and basic bait suitable for local panfish species.

Safety around horses: Families should establish clear rules about approaching horses, particularly for children without previous equestrian experience. Most property owners provide basic guidance for interacting safely with horses on the grounds.

Swimming options: Facilities with pools provide structured water recreation for families. Parents appreciate the maintained swimming areas as alternatives to natural water bodies, which may have limited visibility or unpredictable conditions.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Full-service sites with water, electric, and sewer connections are limited at equestrian campgrounds near Burgaw. Book early for access to these premium locations, especially if planning extended stays.

Maneuverability considerations: While some sites accommodate larger rigs, interior roads may have tight turns or low-hanging branches. Confirm access routes for units exceeding 35 feet.

Dump station protocols: Sanitary stations are available but may have restricted hours. Plan waste management accordingly, particularly during busy event weekends when facilities see higher usage.
