Whaupaunaucau State Forest, managed by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, holds a network of hiking and cross-country ski trails alongside an official lean-to shelter and developed campsite on Trail 20. Camping is free. Beyond the designated site, dispersed leave-no-trace camping is permitted throughout the forest, with primitive tent sites and stone fireplaces scattered across the terrain. Access is on foot, and finding current information takes some effort. The forest includes hilly terrain, stream clearings, and pond-side areas, and draws botanists and birders drawn to its range of species. Tick awareness is warranted in this region. Campers exploring places to camp near Sherburne will find this one of the more low-infrastructure options available, well-suited to self-sufficient backpackers comfortable navigating with a trail map.
