Description
A historic stretch of the Santa Fe Trail cuts through the open shortgrass prairie of Kiowa National Grassland in northeastern New Mexico, offering a rare combination of high-plains solitude and tangible frontier history. The camping area lies beyond a chained gate off Campbell Road — high-clearance is necessary, and the track brushes the undercarriage of lower-slung vehicles. A two-mile walking trail marked with granite posts traces the original wagon route through wide grassland grazed by free-range cattle, with minimal light pollution and thin but occasional LTE signal.
