Yankee hill wildlife management area

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Corn fields surround Yankee Hill Wildlife Management Area on most sides, giving it an open, exposed feel that sets it apart from wooded campgrounds in the region. This is dispersed, drive-in camping in the most literal sense. No designated sites exist, just flat ground along the road where campers park and set up, with a gravel lot near the boat launch providing the most level options.

The lake itself is small and marshy, and visitors consistently flag heavy mosquito pressure, so repellent is worth packing regardless of season. No open fires are permitted. Fishing draws most campers here, and Conestoga State Recreation Area and Area 5 Campground are both within a short drive for those wanting more developed water access nearby. A vault toilet and dumpster are on site, though at least one recent visitor found the area looking unmaintained.

The entrance road has notable ruts, but conditions improve further in. One camper confirmed taking a 12-foot tall vehicle through without trouble. Cell service is available. Stays are capped at three days within any six-day period, and there is no fee. Robert M. describes it as a "small old fishing lake with open area to park and car camp," which captures the no-frills reality well. Anglers and paddlers who want a free overnight close to Lincoln and don't need hookups or shade will find it worth a look.

Trash everywhere, lots of mosquitoes not any good places to set up a tent.

Good for a night or two

Small old fishing lake with open area to park and car camp. I’m in a van with another camper in a small travel trailer. Area looks to be left unmaintained and dirty but it does have pit toilets.

Good over night spot

Situated in the middle of corn fields. The WMA has a large marshy, stagnant pond, so bring mosquito repellent. The parking area is clean. There is a dumpster and vault toilet. I didnt inspect it, I'll leave that up to you. No potable water, but Lincoln Nebraska is only 17 miles away.

Dumpster on site

This place has a dumpster available and it also has a three-day limit in a six-day period.

The sites aren't technically sites. They're just little places off the side of the road that you can park. So just find a spot park there and you're good to go.

The road coming in has some big ruts, but the rest of the park seems to be rut free. I had no issues taking my 12 foot tall short bus through there.
