Accessible via paved roads year-round, Walgren Lake State Recreation Area provides primitive camping around its namesake lake in the Nebraska Panhandle. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission manages this drive-in campground with vault toilets, drinking water, and sites that accommodate RVs up to 50 feet, though hookups are not available.
Sites sit directly around the lake with uneven terrain that may require leveling blocks for RVs. Campers pack out their own trash and can expect quiet evenings with occasional coyote calls. The $24 daily fee for out-of-state visitors includes lake access for fishing and open views across surrounding grasslands. Summer weeknight arrivals often find the campground nearly empty, making it a reliable option for spontaneous trips.
Description
Walgren Lake SRA offers 40 primitive camping sites under the shade of cottonwood trees. Visitors will revel in a good night’s sleep as the area’s remote location and low traffic makes it a quiet getaway. Most camping sites offer fire rings. The area has two vault latrines. Campsites are available on a first come, first serve basis. Visitors must pack out what they pack in as the campground has no trash service.
