Access to Rainbow Lake Montana State Campground starts with a narrow, easy-to-miss turnoff near a highway corner outside Hot Springs, where large trees limit the road width on the way down a steep grade. Sites near the bottom include picnic tables, fire grates, and a concrete vaulted pit toilet. Continuing past the initial camping area leads to dispersed sites directly beside the lake, some of which have grown over from infrequent use, and a few spots close to the water's edge have soft, swampy ground where previous vehicles have gotten stuck. A waterfall with trail access is audible from camp, and birdsong is consistent throughout. Some highway noise carries across the lake. Campers who take the time to scout the layout will find the lakeside sites worth the effort.

Hidden gem

This is a fabulous location, quiet and secluded, although this looks like it resides within the flathead reservation, onX Offroad lists it as being owned by the state of Montana. It is probably worth checking with Montana to see if an additional permit is required. There were no signs at the location that mentioned a tribal permit.

Secret dispersed camping lakeside

The access road was very small and difficult to find near a corner of the highway. Once we found it it was small and had limited with due to Big trees. It's fairly steep down to the river. Once we reach the bottom we drove through some nicely spaced campsites with picnic tables and fire grates. There's also a concrete vaulted pit toilet. Don't be put off by the spray paint that signs cuz if you continue down to the lake there's some beautiful dispersed camping right beside the lake. It's very peaceful with lots. Lots of birds chirping on adjacent to the vaulted toy that you can hear a waterfall which has a trail access according to a local camper there is a little highway noise across the lake about the beautiful site makes up for it. Adjacent to the lake we counted between 5:00 and 10:00 firings. Many of them have started to become overgrown from lack of youths. If you go far enough, it's a little swampy next to the lake. Previous vehicles have got stuck and kind of destroyed the landscape..
