If You’re Desperate Enough

We needed a spot to break up an 800 mile journey and most of the surrounding spots were too far off the road or closed for the season and it was dark. At first we were concerned by the proximity to the interstate (you can hear the eastbound lane but traffic lightened up dramatically so it wasn’t so loud that we couldn’t get to sleep). We were however woken up repeatedly by several, okay many, trains on the opposite side of the site as the interstate (think horns blaring, van shaking).

There’s realistically 4 parking spaces, 3 side by side and 1 on the opposite side near the vault toilet and single shared picnic table. To be fair this is a Fishing Access Site where you can spend the night. The boat ramp looked adequate, the grounds & toilet were clean (with plenty of tp) and it was free.

We arrived after dark and left before sunrise hence no pictures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules for dispersed camping along Petty Creek Road?

Petty Creek FAS is a designated fishing access site rather than a true dispersed camping area, which means specific rules apply. The site has basic regulations consistent with Montana Fishing Access Sites, including pack-in/pack-out trash policies. As a roadside stop used primarily for breaking up long journeys, extended stays may not be permitted. For current and complete regulations, check with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks before your visit.

Where is Petty Creek dispersed camping in Montana?

Petty Creek FAS (Fishing Access Site) is located in western Montana, conveniently situated near Interstate 90. The site serves as a practical stopping point for travelers making long journeys through the area. Its proximity to the interstate makes it easily accessible, though this does mean some highway noise is audible, particularly from the eastbound lane, though traffic typically lightens at night.

Can I fish at Petty Creek while camping there?

Yes, fishing is available at Petty Creek FAS - it's primarily a fishing access site, as the name suggests. The creek provides access to fishing opportunities, though specific fish species and seasonal conditions vary. For best results, bring appropriate fishing gear and check current Montana fishing regulations, including license requirements and any seasonal restrictions before your visit.
