Reached by a dirt and gravel road with a sheer cliff on one side, Big Pine Campground sits within the Big Pine Fishing Access Site along the Clark Fork River in western Montana. The access road is manageable in dry conditions but not recommended for winter travel. A fee applies, and at least one reviewer notes that a Montana conservation license is likely required for any use of state land here, though enforcement was not observed.
The campground has roughly six to seven sites, shaded by trees and spaced well apart from one another. Sites closest to the river are the most sought-after. Trailers should note that the main camping area has limited turnaround space; a right turn toward "Rivulet" at the bottom of the road leads to additional sites with more room. Vault toilets and bear boxes are on-site, and the facilities have consistently drawn positive comments from visitors. Joshua C. notes that "sites looked clean and was very quiet while we were here."
River access runs alongside the campsites and near the day-use area. There are no trails departing from the campground itself, so those planning longer hikes will need to drive elsewhere. Cell coverage varies; T-Mobile showed a 5G signal at the campsites in at least one visit, while another visitor had no service at all. Campers exploring camping spots around Alberton will find this site one of the more developed options in the corridor. Arrive with water and supplies, as there are no services on-site.
