Humbug Spires Wilderness Study Area

Where the Humbug Spires trail begins, this BLM-managed area functions primarily as a trailhead with limited camping potential. The access road shows wear from water runoff, creating rocky and rutted conditions that require careful navigation. Campers report finding sparse flat spots in dense grass near the river, though the riparian location brings notably colder nighttime temperatures.

The site lacks developed amenities like picnic tables or fire rings, with only a vault toilet available. Vehicle space remains tight at the small trailhead area. Cell service reaches one bar for AT&T users. Those planning to hike the six-mile Humbug Spires trail the following morning may find it workable for truck camping, though tent camping presents challenges due to limited level ground and potential vehicle traffic.

This is primarily a trailhead for hiking rather than a developed campground. Limited flat camping spots and basic facilities, though some found scenic meadow locations.

Secluded campsite adjacent to mini spires

Road was rocky and rutted by water runoff. The sprinter all wheel drive negotiated the trail easily from the trailhead up. We found an open meadow of sagebrush. Beautiful sunrise. One bar AT&T signal. We camped adjacent to the private property sign.

Trail head, not a camping area

This location is not a campground, it is the trail head for Humbug Spires and wonderful 6 mile one way hiking trail.  The trail head is small with not much room for vehicles.  While their is a vault toilet at the location, this area is not a campground.  Trail is well worth hiking

We didn’t stay

If you were getting ready to hike in from this trailhead the next morning it might be an okay place to sleep in your truck - or warily in your tent because there could be traffic. No picknic table or fire ring and maybe only one flat spot in the dense grass right by the river. It gets a lot colder in a riparian area at night. Decided to go to Big Hole campground instead.
