Gallatin NF Dispersed near Gardiner — Forest Road 1701

Description

Perched in the mountains just north of Gardiner at the gateway to Yellowstone country, this cluster of informal dispersed clearings sits at the upper end of Forest Road 1701 in Gallatin National Forest, reached by turning off Travertine Road near the old ruins. The road in is narrow, steep, and demands patience — though a 21-foot trailer and low-clearance 2WD vehicles have both made it without incident. Flat grassy areas at the top offer open sky for solar, wide views toward the Yellowstone corridor, and fire rings marking well-used sites.
