Lovely Little Spot!

There are several spots along Red Canyon Road. We stayed for two nights at this spot, which seemed to be the cutest and right next to the creek. (44.8244056, -111.1971723)

It was buggy, but nothing terrible or unexpected for this time of year. The creek is too small to wade to but it was nice to sleep to the sound of it and the dog loved it. An occasional car passed us but it was otherwise fairly private and we couldn’t hear the highway. Close to everything but feels secluded! Only about 15-20 min from West Yellowstone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules for boondocking at Red Canyon in Montana?

Boondocking at Red Canyon follows standard dispersed camping rules on public land. The typical 14-day stay limit applies, after which you must relocate. Practice Leave No Trace principles: pack out all trash, maintain at least 100 feet from water sources, and use existing fire rings when permitted. Camping is allowed only in established sites to prevent resource damage. No reservations are required, but spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Where is Red Canyon located in Montana?

Red Canyon is located in southwestern Montana, near the Montana-Idaho border. The dispersed camping spots are positioned along Red Canyon Road, with some sites situated next to a small creek. The specific coordinates for one popular spot are approximately 44.8244056, -111.1971723. This area offers a peaceful setting in Montana's beautiful backcountry.

What amenities or facilities are available near Red Canyon boondocking areas?

Red Canyon boondocking sites are primitive with no developed amenities. There's a small creek near some sites providing ambient sounds but it's too small for wading or water activities. You'll need to bring all supplies including water, food, and waste disposal equipment. The nearest facilities are in surrounding towns where you can find groceries, fuel, and other necessities. Cell service is likely limited, so prepare accordingly with offline maps and emergency supplies.

What is the best time of year to go boondock camping at Red Canyon?

The optimal time for camping at Red Canyon is late spring through early fall. Summer offers pleasant temperatures but expect some bugs, especially near the creek. Late spring brings flowing water in the creek and emerging wildflowers. Fall provides cooler temperatures and fewer insects. Winter camping is possible but challenging due to potential snow and limited access. Always check road conditions before visiting outside of summer months.
