Fish Hawk Campground - DAY USE ONLY - CAMPGROUND PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Walk-in tent camping defines the experience at Fish Hawk Campground, where six sites sit above Canyon Ferry Lake near Helena. Five of the sites require carrying gear downhill from the parking area, with only the ADA-accessible site positioned next to the vault toilet for drive-up access.

The campground operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis, though trash cans are available at the vault toilet. Each site includes a picnic table and established fire ring, with spacing that provides distance between campers despite limited privacy screening. Three sites require the steepest walk down from the parking area. Lake access remains easy from all sites, allowing campers to reach the water for fishing or other activities.

Busy periods are common at this free Bureau of Reclamation facility. Dexter I. notes "This campground is often busy," reflecting its popularity among campers willing to carry their gear. The parking area accommodates six standard vehicles plus one handicapped spot, with some visitors using vans for stealth camping in the more level parking spaces.

Campers seeking drive-up sites with hookups might consider Ponderosa - Canyon Ferry Reservoir USBR just over a mile north along the reservoir.

A scenic lakeside spot with walk-in tent sites that many appreciated for its natural beauty and established amenities. However, the campground is now permanently closed to overnight camping and operates as day-use only from 5am-10pm.

Day Use Area Only

Absolutely beautiful place with good facilities. Unfortunately it seems this is a day use area only now. Not sure if this changes seasonally. We were here 22 April 2024.

Great views and water access.

This site is technically just a walk to your tent site. There are places to park, so if you have a van you can go stealth and park and sleep here. There area 6 parking spots and 1 handy capped spot. Of these really only the one right next to the ADA spot is level enough for van sleeping. (This is where we parked.). There was one other person sleeping in the lot near us. The other people were tent camping at the designated tent spots. There are 3 tent spots.

SiteParking spot next to ADA location.

Nice walk-in tent only campground

Fish Hawk campground is a walk-in tent only campground. The only site that is not walk in is the ADA site at the Vault Toilet. Six total sites, five of which are walk in. Of those 5 sites three will have you walking down hill to reach. All are near but above the lake, but one can easily walk down to the lake. Site is listed as Pack-in, Pack-out but two trash cans were located at the vault toilet the day I visited. This campground is often busy.

On the lake!

Beautiful spot on the lake! The campsites are walk-in so be aware of that. There is a handicap spot that is next to the toilet you don't have to walk in to. Not a lot of privacy but there is a good distance between sites. Picnic tables and established fire rings here, dogs welcome!
