Artillery Ridge Campground in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania offers multiple horse stalls with a fenced riding arena for equestrians camping near North Potomac, Maryland. The campground provides dedicated facilities for travelers with horses, including wash racks and ample RV sites positioned near the horse stalls. Campers report the ability to walk directly from the campground onto the Gettysburg battlefield for guided horseback tours on rescue horses. The campground accommodates various camping styles with tent sites, RV hookups, and cabins available. Sites are generally clean and well-maintained, though some campers note they can feel close together when the campground is full. The 24/7 firewood dispensing machine and free bundle of wood with s'mores fixings for new arrivals add convenient touches for horse owners setting up camp.

Located approximately 60 miles from North Potomac, the campground positions riders at the edge of historic Gettysburg National Military Park where the battlefield begins just outside the entrance. Horse owners can take guided battlefield tours on horseback directly from the campground property. The National Riding Stables located on the grounds offers these tours using rescue horses, creating a unique way to experience the historic site. Cedarville State Forest, closer to North Potomac, provides an alternative with equestrian trails that go deep into the woods for longer rides, making it one of the stronger horse camping options in the region for riders seeking extended trail access. Campers occasionally hear and smell horses from the family camping loop at Cedarville, where moderate privacy between sites and clean facilities make for a peaceful camping experience. Both locations maintain seasonal availability, with Gettysburg Campground operating from early April to mid-November.

      Artillery Ridge Campground

Great campsite. Fire pit, picnic table, swimming pool ( not open), miniature golf course, laundromat, bathrooms, showers, dump station, gathering areas for groups, playground, and even a horse area and stalls for horses. Dog friendly. Staff was very helpful and curious.

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Gettysburg Campground

      Great Location in Gettysburg

We spent 4 nights at Gettysburg Campground to attend the AIM Club Rally(Lincoln’s Legacy- Gettysburg 250), and it served as base camp for the event.

      WHAT I LIKED:

      • Location, Location, Location: This park is an absolute winner for convenience—just 5 minutes from the Gettysburg battlefields, museums, and the heart of town.

      • The Atmosphere: The staff gave us a warm reception at check-in, and the site itself was clean, well-maintained, and spacious enough to back up to a running creek. Lots of mature trees offer lots of shade and character.

      • Big-Rig Friendly: Navigating a 45-foot motorhome with a toad can sometimes be stressful, but this park was easy to maneuver.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

      • Late-Night Power Struggles: On our final night, the campground experienced grid strain. Our Hughes Watchdog Power Center saved the day—but it had to shut off our power 7 different times due to low voltage. Aside from losing a few hours of sleep to the chorus of appliances cycling off and on, no harm was done. I recommend using a surge protector/voltage regulator if you stay here.

      WOULD WE COME BACK?

      • Absolutely! Minor power hiccups aside, this is a beautiful, clean park situated right in the middle of everything you'd want to see and do in the area.

      Bull Run Regional Park

⭐ 1-Star Review – Shockingly Rude, Misleading, and Embarrassing Experience

I am writing this review because what happened to me at Bull Run Regional Park Campground was not just inconvenient—it was humiliating, unprofessional, and completely avoidable.

I camp in my Tesla. I have already stayed at this exact campground before with no issue. Their online reservation system allowed me to book again—no warnings, no restrictions, nothing to indicate a problem. So I drove all the way from North Carolina to Virginia trusting that everything was fine.

When I arrived to check in, the office staff was literally handing me the paperwork. Out of nowhere, a ranger barged in and bluntly told me: “You cannot camp in a Tesla. You need a separate rig.”

His tone was rude, dismissive, and made me feel like I was doing something dirty or cheap. There was zero respect, zero empathy—just instant judgment. I felt like I was being treated as if I was trying to sneak in or break rules, even though they allowed the booking and accepted my reservation.

If they have such a rule, why wasn’t I notified during booking? Why was I allowed to stay the first time? Why let me drive for hours only to embarrass me at the check-in counter?

The office employee even tried to defend me, but he couldn’t convince the ranger. Instead, they told me I could not stay and promised an immediate refund.

After a long drive, being spoken to like that was extremely disappointing. I’ve camped all over North Carolina and never been treated with such disrespect. Camping in a Tesla is clean, quiet, zero-emission, and safe, yet I was made to feel like I didn’t belong.

To make matters worse, it has now been seven days and not a single dollar of the refund has appeared. When I called, the office representative didn’t even ask for my reservation details and seemed completely clueless. She first said she couldn’t do anything, then suddenly changed her story and said she would “leave a note.” When I asked to speak with someone who could actually help, she put me on hold and suddenly claimed the manager had “just refunded” me and that I would see the money in two business days.

After everything that happened, it felt like another layer of indifference and incompetence.

This entire experience—from the rude ranger to the unprofessional refund handling—left me feeling disrespected and upset. For a campground that charges over $75 a night after fees and taxes, the treatment I received was unacceptable.

Guests deserve honesty, clear communication, and basic respect.

      Artillery Ridge Campground

      Nice campground

Nice clean and open sites but we stayed in the 400 section which was separate from the main campground. Very easy check in. Did it online and just pulled up to the little shack they have and grabbed our packet. We didn’t use the bathhouse but it was very clean. A little older and could probably use a little updating. The campground is only a mile and a half from town which was awesome and direct access to battlefield trails right there. The only complaint we had was the WiFi was awful. Maybe it was because of the section we were in but once the campground filled up it was useless.

    Guide to North Potomac

Equestrian camping near North Potomac, Maryland offers multiple trail riding opportunities in both Maryland and nearby Pennsylvania. The region sits within the Piedmont Plateau with elevations ranging from 300-900 feet, creating moderate terrain suitable for both beginner and experienced riders. Camping options span state forests with basic facilities to full-service campgrounds with dedicated equestrian amenities.

    What to do

Trail riding at Cedarville State Forest: Located about 40 miles from North Potomac, this 3,510-acre forest contains multiple equestrian-friendly trails. "Equestrian trails go deep into the woods if you want a longer trail," notes one camper. The forest maintains several loops specifically marked for horse traffic with hitching posts at strategic points.

Visit historic Gettysburg on horseback: Gettysburg Campground offers proximity to battlefield tours. "Not to mention it's a few minute drive to historic Gettysburg. It's nice and out of the way of the busy parts of town," says one visitor. The campground sits on the quieter northern edge of the historic area.

Fishing and wildlife watching: Bull Run Regional Park provides creek access for simple fishing outings. "The park is nice, but if youre looking for fishing don't go here, but you can in fact kayak down the creek," mentions one reviewer. The park maintains a stable water level even during dry summer months.

    What campers like

Clean, accessible facilities: Pohick Bay Campground receives praise for its maintenance. "Amenities and such are what you'd expect - clean but not new," notes one camper. The bathhouses feature individual shower stalls with consistent hot water.

Wildlife encounters: Many campers appreciate the natural setting at regional parks. One camper at Pohick Bay noted the area is an "Eagle haven! Beautiful campground located near the National Harbor. Eagles everywhere!" Wildlife sightings are common year-round but particularly frequent during spring migration.

Historic exploration: Camp Winery serves as a base for exploring regional history. "Very beautiful spot, did some tent camping. Close to many cool things in the area too," shares one visitor. The camp sits near several Civil War trail markers and historic sites.

    What you should know

Tick prevention essential: Several campgrounds report tick issues, particularly in wooded areas. At Cedarville State Forest, one camper warns, "LOTS and LOTS of ticks. I got one, but my wife and dog got about a dozen each. Just bring tweezers."

Seasonal operating schedules: Most campgrounds in the region have limited seasonal availability. Gettysburg Campground operates "Early Apr to Mid Nov," which aligns with the optimal riding season in the mid-Atlantic region.

Variable site spacing: Site proximity varies significantly between campgrounds. At Bull Run Regional Park, one camper mentions, "The sites are nicely spread out. My site had a slight slope, but was easily overcome using additional blocks on the low side to get the trailer level."

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Cedarville State Forest offers nature programs suitable for children. "They have a scavenger hunt for the kids going all weekend, they had an outdoor movie scheduled for Friday night, a campfire story time scheduled for Saturday night and crafts scheduled for Sunday morning," says one family camper.

Playgrounds and recreation: Bull Run Regional Park has limited playground options. "Only draw back is that there's only one playground that's awkwardly located," notes one reviewer, though the park compensates with other recreation facilities.

Weather considerations: Spring camping brings variable conditions. One camper at Cedarville recalls: "I took my girlfriend car camping in Cedarville State Forest. The camping trip turned more into a stay in the tent the whole trip... due to a tornado watch in the area."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: RVers should note varying electrical service. At Pohick Bay, a camper reports, "We stayed here for 2w while visiting friends in Alexandria. Took me 25-30m to get there so you are far away from bustle of city but not so far that going in to enjoy breakfast or the sights is a feat."

Leveling requirements: Many sites require adjustment for larger rigs. "Not all sites are level (half)," warns a Pohick Bay reviewer, suggesting bringing extra leveling blocks.

Water access intermittent: Some campgrounds experience occasional water service disruptions. A camper at Artillery Ridge Campground reported, "We lost water one morning, and by the time I called in they had already fixed it. The customer service here is excellent, some of the best I've experienced."
