The Best Camping Near Pownal, Maine

We got in late but loved our camp site and the vibe of the campground.

Our campsite was great! Held up well in the torrential rain. The staff was great and everyone was super respectful. Right near a beautiful trail up Bradbury Mtn!

Sites were nice. campground staff is good. clean shower building and dishwashing area.

Close to Freeport and not far from Portland, this is a good affordable camping option for visitors to the area. The park has just enough hiking trails to spend a morning or afternoon exploring. You can access the trails from the sites, no need to drive around the park once you're there. This is an ideal fall camping area with lots of beautiful red maples and yellow birch and beech leaves coloring the hillsides.

Easy family campground

Great camping here!!! Campground host was wonderful and so considerate. The sites are a little close together but some are set back. Campground was not full when we stayed. Dog friendly, toilets, SHOWERS, and the most adorable communal outdoor covered kitchen that had a sink, microwave, free library, and donation boxes with beverages, snacks and veggies. All around great place to stay. Everything was so clean and the staff was more than friendly. We will be going back for sure! 

Lots and LOTS of trails surrounding the campground. Great for biking and trail running. 

Great spot to camp and bike! 

We had a fun one night stay. Took the bikes out on a path and road down some fun hills. The toilets are the nicest pit toilets around. Nice bathhouse and a cute little covered kitchen. Would go back!

Cute little park

This is a small state park campground that is popular with mountain bikers. It had recently closed for the season when I stopped by to check it out. Sites are a good size, generally level and most are quite close to the road, so you’ll contend with road traffic. There are a few walk-in tent sites with lean-tos. If you’re looking for some additional privacy and not afraid of a walk, these are the nicest in the park. Within the campground loop there are pit toilets. Near the entrance is a small kitchen and full-service bathrooms. Campfire wood is available for sale on site and they had a wagon to help you transport it back to your site. Picnic tables and fire rings provided.

  

There are 2 Tentrr sites a short walk into the woods at one end of the loop, farthest from the entrance. These are fully equipped cabin tents, but one had been burned near the stovepipe. In a lot just below the main entrance are group campsites.  

  

Several different trails in the park some leading to a bald summit with views toward the coast. Keep your eyes open for bikes and horses that share the trails. It’s very busy, but the small parking lot does create some limits. You will have to cross the street to reach most of the trails, so you’ll probably want to accompany your kids, though the crossing area is well marked. Winter camping is available, contact the park for details. There are enough trails to keep warm snowshoeing and x-c skiing, but no facilities available, so bring water and all you need for the weather.

This campground has a small amount of sites are close together without much in the way of privacy. There is road noise even at sites furthest from
The road. 

There are a couple Tentrr sites with much more privacy than the regular sites. The outhouses aren’t great and need some updating. However, there is a flush toilet and a shower near the host site. There is also a sort of kitchen for your use that’s really great. It even has a microwave. 
Wood is available from the camp host and we picked up a nice sized bundle for $5. There are a number of trails right at the campground and loads of mtn bike trails on both sides of the park. Ticks are numerous. 

Small but mighty

Loved this campsite, it was accommodating with showers and fresh water, the sight was big and we had lots of fires, also directly adjacent to Bradbury mountain which has some awesome hikes! Highly recommend 

Amazing site and very quiet 

Amazing place!! I grew up hiking here and love it so much!!
