Boat-in access defines the camping experience at Buckle Island, where two dispersed sites accommodate Maine Island Trail Association members at no charge. The larger site sits back in the woods while a smaller option hugs the granite shoreline on the island's east side, both accessible from a sandy landing area that stays exposed during much of the day.
Campers must pack all fresh water since no filterable sources exist on the island. The shoreline site provides sunset views, and the easy beach landing makes this location well-suited for those new to sea kayak camping. Saddleback Island offers another boat-in option for paddlers exploring the Deer Isle Archipelago.
