Mosquito Heaven

My husband and I just needed somewhere to stay overnight while driving through Kansas.  This fit the bill because it was along our route.  It is VERY primitive and used for hunting according to the website.  Our issue was that there were a million mosquitos because the water flowing right beside it.  We couldn't even walk from the car to our teardrop camper without getting swarmed.  Otherwise the area would not have been horrible just to stay overnight.  We did not make it to the bathroom across the road, but it looked like a normal vault toilet.

Yes, camping is permitted at Jamestown Wildlife Area, but it's important to note that it is very primitive. The area primarily serves as a hunting location, so don't expect developed campground amenities. There are no designated campsites with facilities like restrooms, picnic tables, or fire rings. This location is best suited for self-contained camping and those comfortable with a truly rustic outdoor experience.

What activities are available at Jamestown Marsh?

Jamestown Marsh/Wildlife Area primarily caters to hunting activities, particularly during designated seasons. The area also offers opportunities for wildlife observation, birdwatching, photography, and fishing. Hiking is possible through the natural terrain, though there aren't maintained trail systems. The wetland environment makes it a good spot for nature enthusiasts interested in marsh ecosystems. For those seeking recreational activities, be prepared for a natural, undeveloped setting.

How do I access the Jamestown Wildlife Area camping areas?

Jamestown Wildlife Area is accessible by vehicle along established routes. The area serves primarily as a hunting location, so camping spots aren't formally designated or developed. What wildlife can be seen while camping at Jamestown Marsh?

Jamestown Marsh hosts typical Kansas wetland wildlife. Visitors may observe various waterfowl, wading birds, and marsh-dwelling species. The area's proximity to water means mosquitoes are abundant, particularly during warmer months, so bring appropriate insect protection.
