      Millpoint Park

      Riverfront Refuge

This lush, shade-rich, pet-friendly CG sits completely surrounded by the oft overlooked Spring Bay Fen Nature Reserve, creating the rare sensation of being deep in nature while still only a short drive from Peoria. A looping, shade-covered gravel lane guides you past roughly 80 generously spaced sites, each perched beneath tall hardwoods, before opening to the sought-after waterfront slots that frame spectacular sunset views across the water. Whether you’re casting a line, slipping a kayak off the boat ramp or simply leaning back in a camp chair during Golden Hour, this is a campground that practically forces you to exhale. As my review from a year and a half ago provided substantial detail, here I'm just going to point out the HIGHS and LOWS while adding some additional fotos of the CG.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spacious, well-shaded sites that are far roomier than most RV parks in central IL; (2) Excellent mix of back-in and pull-thru sites with water, electric and sewer hookups; (3) Direct access to Upper Peoria Lake with a strong boat launch for anglers, paddlers and sunset chasers; (4) Two additional ponds on property for simple shoreline fishing - perfect for the kiddos; (5) Exceptionally clean restroom and bathhouse facility near the entrance; (6) Three rentable cabins for non-RV travelers; (7) Easy hiking options north and south of the property, including the small beach area at Funks Run; (8) Friendly ownership with a real character where the owner, Don, is known for going above and beyond for campers; (9) Reliable shade almost everywhere, keeping summer stays comfortable.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) The well water contains noticeable iron, which MIGHT be fine for showers but not recommended for drinking; (2) Mosquitos, gnats and ticks are summer regulars here in central IL, so be sure to bring DEET and scented candles; (3) Supplies are limited on-site, so trips into town are necessary for groceries or extras, but the good news is that in less than 20 minutes south of here, you'll discover a Home Depot, Lowe's, Bass Pro Shop, Target, Walmart and Costco; (4) Primitive tent areas - which can be found in the open lot north of the property right on the river - exist but provide little separation or privacy compared to the RV loops; (5) This CG can fill up quickly on warm-weather weekends and the summer holidays, especially the waterfront stretch.

      Happy Camping!

      Nature’s Way RV Park

Quiet spot that was perfect for a getaway

Took my daughter for the weekend. Camp host were wonderful and even worked with us when I arrived later then planned. Full hookup was perfect and location was great.

Location is close to Utica so we were able to enjoy the local shops and restaurants.

Wonderful spot and we will definitely be back.

      Comlara County Park

Quiet and beautiful, but not the best bathrooms

$25 a night for 30 amp hookup is pretty good! The sites are clean and spacious. It’s quiet too! Pretty lake, but sites aren’t right on the lake.

The bathrooms need some work. Water had a boil order on it and showers only worked in the men’s room. Water was HOT! Which is great! However, the water smelled metallic…

      Pleasant Creek Campground

      Sufficient for a quick stopover

We added a day to our Starved Rock itinerary and couldn't get into Starved Rock State Park Campground that night, so quickly booked this from the road. Got into the Highlands, which was packed and super close quarters. Not what we love, but several sites looked like extended families/friends had booked together and they were having a blast, especially the kids. Looked like they had some activities available and we saw several kids with fishing poles heading somewhere fun. We didn't explore the rest of the grounds; perhaps other sections afforded more privacy. I thought it was a bit pricey for the amenities (one shower house very far away) and hemmed-in feel, but it served our purpose for one night.

      Hickory Grove Campground

      Really nice spot

Even in this incredible heat ( high 90's) the woodsy campground feels pleasant. Birds tweeting, lots of space between sites. The zero entry swimming pool is new and spotlessly clean, as are the showers. The owners are friendly and helpful. I highly recommend.

      Millpoint Park

      Staff was Superior

We arrived as a storm was blowing in. Tornado watch, severe thunderstorms and torrential rains. Despite the in conditions, when learning it was our first night ever in an RV, our host went above and beyond to meet our needs. Although we reserved a 30 amp site, our site only had 50. She ventured out in the pouring rain to bring us an adapter. The next morning, our site had flooded and she rode out to our site to assess the situation. She was incredibly responsive by call and text. We were baptized by fire on our first night of RV life, but because of her, we made it!

Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park Campground

Camp Where 100-Year-Old Locks Gaze Over Your Tent

Nestled along a 104.5-mile corridor across parts of northwestern Illinois, Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park offers a unique and unexpectedly charming, albeit primitive camping experience. Spread across multiple sites like Lock 6, Lock 11, Lock 21, Bridge 14, and Lock 22, this park stretches its campsites along a historic towpath beside century-old canal locks. First impressions? Think gentle grass clearings, basic picnic setups and a nostalgic vibe that combines outdoor adventure with engineering heritage all the while living up to bare-bones camping ethos.

Facilities remain strictly primitive as this is ‘Class C’ camping, meaning no hookups, no showers, no modern frills … just a pit toilet and a fire ring at each site. Cost is only $8 per night per family. Youth groups pay a minimum daily fee starting at $20. Other perks: senior citizens and disabled campers may qualify for free stays, depending on day and status. You’ll need to stop by the Visitor Center near Sheffield to pay (no reservations and everything at each lock is considered first-come, first-served), and all the drinking water is only available at central locations at each lock, not at individual campsites, so plan accordingly. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and campfires must stay in designated pits.

The setting is deeply outdoorsy and expansive. The canal’s towpath is a cyclist’s and hiker’s dream, with up to 155 miles to explore (miles of level surface, biking, hiking, horseback riding in some sections and even snowmobiling when it’s seasonally open). Anglers love the Hennepin Canal system as the waters are regularly stocked with bass, bluegill, walleye, catfish and even trout during special stocking events. Canoeing and kayaking are permitted with portage around non-operational locks and birding or historical sightseeing along the route is a delightful bonus.

Insider Tips? Here’s a smattering: (1) Pick campsites closest to the canal but slightly back from parking that will deliver land that is flatter, vistas that are more scenic and spaces that are quieter; (2) Swing by the Visitor Center near Sheffield first for maps and essential info as you’ll need drinking water from there in case you didn’t bring your own;(3) If traveling with a dog or horse, check designations as only certain sites (e.g. Lock 21) allow equestrian camping; (4) Fishermen should bring rods early as anglers that I encountered say the catches here are worth the effort; (5) No pumps / dump stations so pack accordingly and use nearby towns for full services; and (6) Post-camping grub: head to Sheffield afterward for local eats like Belluccio’s for deep dish pizza, Italian beef & sausage sandwiches, Café 129 with its smoked prime rib and Red’s Bar & Grill for fantastic deep fried pork tenderloin sandwiches, which is a staple in these parts.

      Happy Camping!

    Guide to Minonk

The Illinois River Valley offers convenient camping opportunities near Minonk, Illinois, with sites typically situated at elevations between 600-750 feet. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F with moderate humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons bring cooler 50-70°F temperatures. Tent sites throughout the region range from primitive walk-in locations to developed spots with basic utilities, with most campgrounds maintaining standard check-in times between 2-4pm.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Millpoint Park near East Peoria, campers can fish directly from multiple access points. One visitor noted, "There is a fantastic boat launch that will have you fishing, kayaking and experiencing this body of fresh water shortly after you anchor into your spot for the night. In fact, you don't even need to get into a boat, by accessing one of 2 small little lakes where you can simply cast a line in from the dock or around the perimeter."

Hiking trails: Buffalo Rock State Park offers accessible walking paths about 50 minutes from Minonk. According to one reviewer, "At a leisurely pace, it only took me a couple of hours to walk all the trails. They are nice well-kept trails. Most of the surface is gravel but some parts are just dirt. The trail is wide and mowed at least two feet on either side."

Swimming: Condits Ranch provides family-friendly water recreation during summer months. A camper mentioned, "The small fishing pond, the swimming hole and the clubhouse were great to mix in to keep the youngsters entertained."

Boat access: Carl Spindler Campground gives water enthusiasts direct access to Upper Lake Peoria. "This waterfront campground is perfect for anglers and particularly boaters who want to have their vessels close at hand, tied up at the marina, providing quick and EZ access to a fresh body of water that is formed where Upper Lake Peoria meets the Illinois River."

    What campers like

Quiet tent sites: Comlara County Park offers secluded tent camping areas approximately 35 minutes from Minonk. "The rustic tent sites are located on the opposite side of the lake from the RV's in an area called White Oak. These sites are the way to go for privacy. It was roughly a quarter-mile hike to site 14, where I stayed," reported one visitor.

Yurt camping: While yurt camping near Minonk, Illinois has become increasingly popular, Pleasant Creek Campground provides some of the area's most accessible options. Campers appreciate the layout, with one noting, "Because of it's layout, you never get a true sense of how big the whole campground is (50 acres). The largest and most open area is on top of the hill (the Highlands) but there are other areas that are shadier and more close to nature."

Waterfront views: Millpoint Park provides scenic waterfront camping with ample space. "Perched on Upper Peoria Lake where the Illinois River conjoins, this family-friendly and pet-inviting lush camping outpost is completely surrounded by Spring Bay Fen Nature Reserve, absolutely guaranteeing a sublime encounter with nature on top of offering direct waterfront sites."

Clean facilities: Nature's Way RV Park maintains quality restrooms and amenities. A camper reported, "The meticulously clean restroom/bath house facility is located near the front adjacent to the main office, where next to this are 3 cabins that can be rented, just in case you forgot your tent or RV."

    What you should know

Tent site locations: When planning a tent camping trip near Minonk, be aware that some campgrounds separate RV and tent areas. At Buffalo Rock State Park, "Camp sites aren't actually in buffalo rock, they're across the street at I&M canal. You have to walk a bit to get there but the sites are great. If you're looking for privacy this is it. There aren't toilets tho or running water."

Water quality concerns: Several campgrounds in the area have mineral-heavy water. One camper at Millpoint Park noted, "The water here has a lot of iron in it, so don't attempt to drink it, but according to the locals, it's fine to shower in, so I would encourage you to bring a decent amount of bottled water with you."

Seasonal considerations: Most yurt camping opportunities near Minonk operate seasonally. At Pleasant Creek, operations run "from April 15 to October" according to posted schedules.

Flooding risk: Some sites may experience drainage issues after heavy rain. One camper at Pleasant Creek warned, "The bulk of the campsites are down in a valley and ours was along the creek. A heavy downpour resulted in water up over our ankles all through the site!"

    Tips for camping with families

Playground amenities: Kentuckiana Campground offers extensive play areas for children. "They have a nice kids play area in the Hollar, Complete with a giant slide," notes one reviewer, while another mentions it's "Great for kids. Decent little parks. Huge slide in the holler."

Swimming options: When traveling with children near Minonk, consider campgrounds with dedicated swimming areas. At Condits Ranch, a visitor mentioned, "We did tent camping and the setup was perfect. Huge lot. Fire pit and electric. The small fishing pond, the swimming hole and the clubhouse were great to mix in to keep the youngsters entertained."

Entertainment planning: Pack alternate entertainment for rainy days, particularly when yurt camping near Minonk. One camper at Kentuckiana mentioned, "There is no cell/LTE reception out here (Sprint or Verizon). We drove to Casey's for a pizza and got a small cell signal there. If you like to watch movies, I recommend bringing a DVD player since you likely won't be able to stream Netflix."

Spacing considerations: Some family-friendly sites offer more room than others. A camper at Comlara noted, "Depending on your rig, you could probably fit 3 or 4 cars at the site, to give you an idea of the size. The firepit is built with pavers and an insert."

    Tips from RVers

Site spacing: When staying in motorhomes near Minonk, expect varied site density. At Carl Spindler Campground, "Site sizes are, for the most part, very generous and can accommodate a large RV and extra vehicle/s. Some are very close to each other (beach and overflow) and there is no physical separation between them."

Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds can present challenges. At Pleasant Creek, a camper warned, "The overall layout isn't great. To get up to the sites, it's a one way up and down road. Hopefully no one else is coming the opposite direction...The dump station was also up a one way in/out hill. You had to make a tight U-turn coming down from your site to get up to it."

Hookup variations: Check specific site utilities before booking. At Nature's Way, "For the RV driving/5th Wheel toting crowd, Nature's Way has spots reserved on its front porch lawn that you will encounter upon first arriving to the entrance. There's about 20 or so designated RV spots here that offer full hook-ups including 30/50 amp electric, water and sewage."

Reservation protocols: Some campgrounds have specific check-in processes. A reviewer at Millpoint noted, "We were late reserving a campsite for Memorial Day Weekend. But Don had a spot for us. We are glad we stayed."
