Convenient I74 Highway Camping Pitstop

As my post from a bit more than a year ago provided quite a bit of detail on this campground, I’m following up on that review by sharing more fotos as well as providing a topline update:

Highlights: (1) Closely located to I74 so access is a positive; (2) Sites are spacious, incredibly level, well-shaded and this feels like a camping oasis in the middle of corn country; (3) Wonderful Midwestern hospitality; (4) Incredibly manicured grounds and well-taken care of facilities; and (5) Very well maintained and impeccably cleaned restrooms, showers and pool

Lowlights: (1) Closely located to I74 so noise is a negative; (2) There’s not much in the way of shops and restaurants here, so if you want anything of substance, either bring it with you or you’ll have to head back to Bloomington to get it; and (3) Because this is a highway layover for those road warriors traveling up and down I74, there lacks a sense of community amongst campers

Happy Camping!

Roadside RV Hideaway

Maybe it was the hand-written note taped to the office door that explained how the front office manager / owner was laid up with a bad back, so checking in was on the ‘honor system’ or the fact that we were just looking for a nice, flat and quiet place to lay up for the night that wouldn’t take us too far off course, but for whatever the reason, while we weren’t looking to hole up at Kamp Komfort RV Park & Campground, we ended up there and it was a sublime experience.

To be blunt, Kamp Komfort is literally RIGHT NEXT to the major highway 74 running through these parts connecting Peoria to Bloomington (just 8 miles away) in central Illinois and while I know these parts incredibly well, discovering this campground along with the nearby town of Carlock, was completely a pleasant surprise. So if there is no avoiding the non-stop swooshing of traffic from the nearby interstate (and there isn’t, unless you count high-grade ear plugs into the mix), then just accept that you are in a sweet spot that offers up a very well-manicured green pasture where the numerous (by my count, nearly 50) diagonal gravel-laden RV parking spots that come with all of the expected RV hook-ups (30 / 50 amp electric, water and sewage), in addition to the other amenities that exist here, including an in-ground pool (open between Memorial and Labor Day). What you will enjoy most, apart from the ‘down-to-earth’ feeling to this place, is the very well-meaning and down-right hospitable folks you will encounter, from the people that run the place to the neighbors you will meet, there is an unmistakably strong Midwestern sense of hospitality that can be found here.

Insider’s tips? Here’s a handful: (1) There’s not much in these parts, although at only 8 miles away, if you wanted anything and don’t mind going for a short drive to nearby Bloomington, then that shouldn’t be a problem, but if you are looking for something close and nearby, and are eyeing the township of Carlock, then you’ll only find a BP gas station, the Carlock Family Restaurant that features some good ‘ol country cookin’ and that’s about it – this really is a single stop sign (no stop sign) town to revel in!; (3) If you are on the hunt for some real outdoor tent camping or really great hiking or care to dip your kayak into some really nice fresh water, then head on over to nearby Comlara Park, featuring Evergreen Lake, which has some really nice areas to explore, in particular Deer Island, which you can anchor on or near and explore this little picturesque outcrop; and (4) Should you want to ponder a great evening out and are ‘jones’ing for some really amazing restaurants to imbibe the best of what Illinois has to offer, then you’ll have to head back to Normal–Bloomington for one of the following: Portillo’s, for an outstanding Italian beef & sausage sandwich (don’t ask, just order!), Giordano’s, for some of the best deep-dish Chicago pizza you will ever encounter ... or, and here it is ... the most iconic and local Italian (by Midwestern standards. mind you) joint you will encounter in these parts, called Avantis, which features, of course, pasta, but the handmade subs are what make this place legend.

Happy Camping!

Very nice and well organized

This is a nice campground located about 10 miles from Bloomington. It has full hookups at all the sites.
The owner met us when we arrived and took us to our lot. They have a pool and a VERY nice shower house and restroom. They also have laundry machines which is especially nice for a large family like ours. The owner was very nice and they also pick up your trash daily for you.
They have some playground equipment for the kids as well as a big open space for playing and running. It did seem like it is mostly people passing through the area and not many campers stay for long durations.
Overall a very nice location with all the amenities

Very clean campground

The staff at the campground are very friendly. The campground is very neat and clean. It's very easy to get into and out of. The only downside is it backs up to an interstate so there is some road noise. We would definitely stay here again.

Quaint campground close to highway

We stayed here in Sept 2020. Nice staff, quiet enough for being somewhat close to the highway. The trees seemed to block the noise well. They have a pool that was closed because of a virus or something. Sort of small, which made it easy for kids to ride around on bikes, and for us to walk to the playground. We had a good LTE/cell signal. There is a tower very close by. We have sprint. They drop off wood and one of those Lowe’s type metal fire pits if you want one. You can’t put the firepit on the grass, it has to be in the gravel, so that took away some of the coziness. Some of the other sites have permanent fire pits. Some sites have concrete pads, some have a pad for the camper, some just have a small one next to the camper parking. You can’t put a rug on the grass, so that makes relaxing right outside the door of the camper a little less enjoyable, if you don’t have a site with a small pad. The sites do have picnic tables. Overall we enjoyed ourselves and have already reserved another stay

Quaint campground near highway

We stayed here in September 2020. They deliver the firepit and wood if you need it. They have a pool, that was closed because of virus stuff. Smallish campground and good areas for kids to ride bikes and play. Nice Little swingset. Good cell signal(there is a tower very close). Quiet, depending on where you are in the campground because of being sort of close to the highway, but the trees seem to block the noise pretty well regardless. Some of the sites have concrete pads, some don’t. You can’t put a carpet on the grass, and you have to put the firepit on the gravel, so you don’t harm the grass. This made the fire slightly less cozy, but not a deal breaker, we’ll be back no question.
