Sitting along the Clearwater River at mile post 18.6 on U.S. Highway 12, McKay's Bend Recreation Site runs about 15 RV sites and 3 tent sites under the management of Idaho Department of Fish and Game. The campground is open year-round, and paved RV pads with concrete picnic table slabs keep setup straightforward. Proximity to the highway is real: road noise registers as a low hum in the evening, and fishing traffic through the grounds starts early in the morning and continues late into the night as anglers cycle in and out.
Full hookups, including electric, water, and sewer, are available at each RV site, and the shower rooms and restrooms draw consistent praise for their cleanliness. A dirt road leads from the campground down to the river, where fishing draws the most visitors. Site 8 has a river view but little shade, while other sites have more tree cover. Campers holding a senior America the Beautiful pass have reported paying around $9 for a full-hookup site, roughly half the standard rate.
The campground fills up quickly, particularly on weekends, so arriving without a reservation carries some risk. The long-tenured camp host, Norm, comes up repeatedly in reviews for his attentiveness and local knowledge. "Norm (host) is awesome and full of knowledge," notes Don M., who also found the grounds well-maintained. Cell signal runs about two bars. Anglers and paddlers exploring campgrounds near Juliaetta may find McKay's Bend a convenient base, while Gibbs Eddy Clearwater River Access provides a nearby alternative for campers wanting a different setup along the same stretch of river.
