Weather conditions remain consistently warm year-round, though cabins provide shelter during occasional rain showers that affect the island.

Skydiving proximity: Camp Mokuleia cabins sit directly across from a skydiving operation. "Across the street there is also a skydiving company, so throughout the day you will often times see parachuters appearing in the sky," notes Apryl E. about the Camp Mokuleia experience.
Rock climbing access: Several cabin facilities provide proximity to Hawaii's climbing areas. "This campground is very close to the highest concentration of rock climbs in all of Hawaii! The Mokule'ia wall has over 60 climbs ranging from beginner to expert and includes trad, sport, and toprope routes," explains Alan B.
Beach activities: Cabin locations offer various water experiences from calm paddling conditions to swimming. "The water is pretty mellow (at least during the summer) and is great for stand up paddling," according to one visitor who stayed at Camp Mokuleia cabins.
What campers like
Minimal crowds: Unlike tourist-heavy areas, many cabin locations offer quieter beach access. "The beach area was really nice and not crowded at all," reports Brittany B. about her experience at Camp Mokule'ia.
Wind protection: The northwestern shore provides shelter from prevailing winds. "In January, the winds were strongest from the East and we had to vacate our other campground when winds were up to 20MPH off the ocean. This side of the island gave us a break from the wind," explains one camper about the Mokuleia area.
Wildlife viewing: Several cabin areas offer opportunities to observe marine life. "Beautiful beach right by the military base. More of a local spot than tourist area. Can go kayaking. Good trees for shade so you don't get too hot," notes Noah L. about Bellows Field Beach Park.
What you should know
Military access requirements: Several cabin options have restricted access. "Great cabins on ground, but you'll have to be military to rent. Civilians can tent camp on the opposite side," explains Sandy S. regarding Bellows Field Beach Park accommodations.
Sand management challenges: Fine Hawaiian sand can be problematic in cabins. "The sand here is so fine, it will make its way in to your rent, no matter how tight you close it up," warns a visitor about the Bellows cabins.
Pet restrictions: Hawaii state campgrounds have strict policies. "There are no dogs allowed on ANY Hawaii State Campground! So if you have a dog in Hawaii, you cannot bring your loved one(s) camping anywhere," notes riki L.
Tips for camping with families
Screen protection: Insects can be problematic at some cabin locations. "Only suggestion is to bring fly tape or fly traps. A screen tent would be a superb addition," advises Stephen W. about staying at Kunia River Farm cabins.
Dedicated bathroom access: Some facilities provide private bathroom facilities. "During covid they were only using every other site, and had installed a shower and sink at each one. The bathrooms are a walk away inside a yurt. We were assigned a bathroom for just our site and given a key for it," explains one visitor.
Supply locations: Plan for grocery and supply runs. "For supplies, it's about 15 minutes back to Haliewa where there are tons of restaurants, food cards, groceries and a Longs Drug," notes Stephanie Z. about the Camp Mokuleia area.
Tips from RVers
Limited hookup options: Most cabin areas have minimal RV infrastructure. "This campground is set up for anything from large groups (50+) to small families. There are cabins to rent out or places to pitch a tent," explains a camper about the amenities at Bellows Field Beach Park.
Parking limitations: Vehicle access varies by location. "You are not able to drive in your car, but it's only a short walk, even to the furthest away sites," explains a visitor about the cabin area at Camp Mokuleia.
Security considerations: Gated facilities provide added security. "The property has a gate with a code that you can go in and out as you please, and the staff were really helpful and kind," notes one camper about their experience at a cabin facility.
