County-managed Bellows Field Beach Park sits on Oahu's windward coast along Waimanalo's white sand shoreline. The campground operates Friday through Monday only, with tent sites spread across a sandy area directly behind the beach. Campers drive onto sand to reach their spots, so vehicle clearance matters.
Sites lack formal boundaries, creating what one reviewer called "a free for all" atmosphere during busy weekends. The waterfront positions fill first, giving campers immediate beach access for swimming and bodyboarding. Steve & Ashley G. note that "you will need to come early on a Friday to get a spot for the weekend." Large groups frequently gather here, and noise levels run high through Saturday nights before most campers clear out Sunday evening.
The beach offers consistent waves suitable for bodyboarding, though the offshore reef structure doesn't create ideal surfing conditions. Kite surfing also draws participants to these waters. A forested area behind the camping zone provides shade during hot afternoons. The fine sand works its way into tents regardless of closure methods, according to multiple campers.
Access requires either military credentials for the base section or civilian permits for the public camping area. Reservations help secure preferred spots during peak periods and holidays. The campground sits about seven miles from places to camp around Kaneohe, with supply runs possible to nearby Waimanalo town or north to Kailua. Seasonal Portuguese man o' war can line the beach during certain periods.
Campers wanting a quieter alternative can consider Waimanalo Beach Cottages just down the coast.
