Over the Hill Backcountry Campsite is located in [Rocky Mountain National Park](https://thedyrt.com/camping/colorado/near/rocky-mountain-national-park), CO. The terrain consists of rugged mountains and dense forests. Nearby attractions include Bear Lake and Trail Ridge Road, with temperatures ranging from 30°F in winter to 80°F in summer.

Over the Hill Backcountry Campsite — Rocky Mountain National Park

Estes Park is the gateway to Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. Expect long entrance lines heading through Estes Park into Rocky Mountain but know that your campsites will be worth it.

Obviously, the best camping near Estes Park is in Rocky Mountain National Park. RV and tent camping spots go quickly in Rocky Mountain, especially in peak season, so get your reservations well in advance. If you can’t get a spot in one of the park’s campgrounds, you can utilize ample Forest Service land on the other side of Estes Park. If you’re looking for something a bit less trafficked, head towards Pinewood Springs, CO, and climb any of the numerous mountains on the way.

The Best Camping Near Estes Park, Colorado

This is a secluded backcountry site about 2.2 miles from Sprague Lake TH or 1.3 miles from East Portal TH. The hike is fairly easy to follow with signs guiding along the way. This would be a great spot if you're wanting to camp in the backcountry by yourself as there is only one site available at Over the Hill. There is another backcountry site about .5 mile away. There is a compost toilet located a short walk from the tent site but all other items must be brought in. A bear canister is required but we did not encounter any wildlife during our stay.

Over the Hill Backcountry Site

This site (and all Rocky Mountain National Park wilderness sites) is reservation only. Reservations can be made by searching "Rocky Mountain National Park Wilderness Permits" on Recreation.gov. The price per permit is $36. There is no dispersed camping within the park. 

  

Hard-sided bear canisters are required for storage of food and all other scented items from April 1st-October 31st.
