Awesome Primitive Beach Campsite

There are tons of options along the shore of the lake in this area. We kayaked into our campsite from Sunset Point campground on Labor day weekend and didn't have any issues finding a spot. There was lots of boat activity during the day but it slowed down in the evening.

Boat Camping Adventure

This was an amazing campsite right in Grand Bay on Lake Granby. Sandy Beach front and fire pit already built. The campsite has a lot of slopping to it so it can be a challenge to find level ground for the tent but the views will always outweigh that. Solid fishing from the shore and just off the point for Lake trout. This site does border Rocky Mountain National Park so be sure that you have not crossed over into the boundary border.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the best dispersed camping spots around Lake Granby?

The shoreline of Lake Granby offers excellent dispersed camping opportunities. Grand Bay area features sandy beachfront sites with pre-built fire pits, though be prepared for sloping terrain that might require some searching for level tent spots. Another popular option is accessing remote shoreline sites by kayak from Sunset Point campground, which can provide more seclusion. The lake's extensive shoreline means you can find spots with varying levels of privacy and access to the water, with many offering direct shore fishing opportunities and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Is a permit required for dispersed camping at Lake Granby?

No special permit is required for dispersed camping at Lake Granby beyond the standard Arapaho National Forest entrance pass. While camping is free, you'll need to display a valid recreation pass on your vehicle when parked in designated areas. These passes can be purchased at ranger stations, online through the USFS website, or at local retailers in Granby. Always check current requirements before your trip, as regulations can change.

What are the regulations for dispersed camping near Lake Granby, CO?

Dispersed camping at Lake Granby follows standard Arapaho National Forest regulations. Campers must stay at established sites that show previous use, with camping limited to 14 consecutive days. All fires must be contained in existing fire rings, and a complete fire ban may be in effect during dry conditions. Pack out all trash and use proper waste disposal methods. Keep campsites at least 100 feet from water sources. Sites are first-come, first-served with no reservations. For the most current regulations, check with the Sulphur Ranger District office before your trip.

What's the best time of year for dispersed camping at Lake Granby?

Summer through early fall offers the best dispersed camping experience at Lake Granby. Late June through August provides warm days perfect for swimming and water activities, though this period sees the highest boat traffic. Early September, including Labor Day weekend, still offers comfortable temperatures with decreasing crowds. The water level is typically optimal during summer months, providing better shoreline camping options. Spring camping can be challenging due to snowmelt and mud, while winter camping requires specialized cold-weather gear and experience. Always check road conditions before heading out, especially in shoulder seasons.
