This is a privately owned spot with many amenities for campers and also sand board rentals for the Dunes. We have only camped in the dispersed area. In season there is a rail car for bathrooms in the dispersed area, otherwise you'll need to use the facilities where the RV's park. IT is quiet but the camp spots can be close together. both times we have been here, we had deer walk thru our site. You also have great views of the dunes in most spots and the 14ers near Crestone.

it all depends where you camp if there will be toilets or not but, either way this place is breath taking.

The campground itself was ok. The views were great, the facilities were nice, clean, and extensive (they have a laundry room, restaurant, and gas pumps in addition to typical facilities), the sites could have used some maintenance though; some trees needed to be trimmed, tent sites could have used some leveling, roads needed to be scraped. While I frequently camp in, and enjoy, primitive sites with all the above issues, I don’t particularly enjoy paying $20 a night for a primitive level site in a developed campground. The campground, with at least 100 sites, was quite full when I arrived around 7:30 pm on a weekday. I stopped at the restaurant/store to enquire about camping and was told by a teenager manning the counter that it was past the security booth and then said nothing more, so I assumed I payed and got a map at the booth. After driving through the booth and realizing no one was there I continued on to find a site and set up before headIng back down to pay only to realize the store closes at 8:00. Not a big deal for me personally, but the campsite could have lost money if I weren’t an honest person due to the incompetent attitude of their staff. My suggestion is to arrive early in the day if possible and save your time and money by camping at one of the free primitive sites in the park. The morning after camping, I drove up the mountain on the primitive road and passed many empty campsites. You do need a 4 wheel drive, high clearance vehicle to reach them and need to reduce tire pressure to 20-30 psi, but the views are so worth it! (just a note: the rangers suggest filling them back up once past the sand but DON’T. It is a very rocky climb after the sand and you could easily pop a tire!) One of the rangers told me all the campsites along the mountain road are free and from a glance they looked better maintained and more comfortable than the Oasis campground! Just make sure to take water as they are truly primitive, with just a fire ring and bear locker. 

Crowded and staffed by teenagers 

The roads are really rocky. The views are really pretty. It was nice to find a campsite with a shower after 2 nights without one. 

Rocky Campground

Everyoneeryone working at the Oasis  super friendly! They sell just about everything you might need or want, and you can rent boards at reasonable prices for the whole day. 
The showers, bathrooms, and laundry are immaculately clean, and spacious, and there's a potable water accessible everywhere. Unfortunately, tent campers can't access the swimming pool, but the showers stay warm so it's enough to get clean, eat dinner, and go straight to sleep!
Campsites are close enough to respect neighbors' privacy but the trees keep everyone shaded and also far enough apart to be quiet. 
There are big, black ants running around all over the place, but they don't bite...they'll just crawl all over you in you sit still along their path. The trees also drip sap randomly, we noticed, but it wasn't a bother.



Excellent Service, Amenities, & Sunsets

This place charges PER Person, including kids, which is extortion! We were charged $36 a night for a camp site that was in terrible shape. We actually drove into town to buy a rake so we could clean up all the trash left around. We were also told because they don't have metal fire rings, fires we're not allowed during a class 1 fire ban. Seems that with the crazy rates they charge, they could upgrade the sites with this feature. 
We also were appalled with how costly everything was at the store. $3.75 for a 10lb bag of ice. $20 for a board rental and due back by 7 (you can really only be on the dunes in morning and evening so much of the day you can't use the boards). I have definitely stayed in fabulous campgrounds with less amenities for less cost. Unfortunately, they have a captive customer base because Pinon Flats are always full.
So in conclusion, if they continue to charge such high prices for their sites, clean them up, upgrade the fire pits and then maybe the cost would be worth it.  

Pricey for what you get...

We came down from North of Medano Pass through the dunes, planning to camp in the dunes but got down too late to buy a permit from the visitor's center and the Pinon Campground was full. The only other close option for overnight camping is the Oasis. They charged almost $40 for 3 people, one night. We slept sloped and over a ton of large rocks - there weren't any other spots. They are racking in the money at this location, you'd think they'd at least spend the money to level the grounds and put in some sand/remove the rocks. I'm thankful we only stayed for one night.

The actual Oasis store/restaurant on the other hand was super convenient. We had dinner and breakfast there and albeit a bit expensive, still good and all of the staff was super friendly. We also rented a board for the dunes which was easy.

Very expensive for rocky, sloped sites

We loved this camp site! It was our first time to tent camp in Colorado and it was great. Several sites to choose from. Some have views of the dunes, some are more secluded. Bathrooms were clean. Very spacious tent site with a fire pit. Our tent sleeps 6 and we had no trouble fitting in the spot.

Amazing stay with views of the Dunes! 

There are around 90 primitive tent only campsites here in addition to a couple dozen RV sites, cabins, and a mini lodge. 

$25/night for a tent only site, but the location to the park can’t be beat and the fee includes two showers (unlimited time). 

Some sites have picnic tables (not in the best shape) and all have fire rings.

The general store is open from 8am-8pm, along with the restaurant.  Everything was pretty reasonably priced and the food was good. They also rent boards for surfing the sand dunes. 

The view of the sunset and Milky Way were priceless.  We would definitely return. 

Excellent Proximity to Great Sand Dunes

Incredible views and close proximity to Great Sand Dunes National Park make this campground a must stay. Site 33 was close to the extremely clean bathrooms and perfect for our group!

Must stay!!

My family and I made our first trip to The Great Sand Dunes this year. The campground had lots of amenities and was in a great location. This was our first RV trip and we found the RV spots were pretty packed in together. But they are all in 1 line, the view was great, and bathrooms are really close. This is a great place to stay a couple nights.

Sits above the dunes. Also has very clean restrooms with showers to attempt and get sand off.

Clean with an amazing view

Four stars because the campsite at the actual park was full and the one outside of the park was unorganized, but they had great service and were very friendly. Hiked around 10 miles with my dog in the dunes and on the mountain and will return in a couple days to go to the summit.

Undescribable fun with views

The campsite is cool, but crowded. You can get a permit to backpack a mile into the dunes (away from people's sight). It's a good hike into the dunes, but once you find a spot, it's incredible. Beware what time you go, it can be freezing and windy, so best to go probably in May. It's extremely secluded - you're fully surrounded by the dunes with the mountains in the background. 
Obviously good to be prepared with plenty of water and food cuz sand... 
Highly recommend doing this! One of my favorite and most memorable camping/backpacking trips, for sure. 

Better camping on the dunes 

It's slight hidden behind a bigger RV andodge campground. It was beautiful views from ANY tent site you got. It had bathroom n accessible showers if needed. Firewood. Friendly hosts and snacks. And RIGHT outside the entrance to see the dunes. It was awesome! Close to lakes n rivers to fish and just beautiful.

Dispersed camping sites available to those with high clearance 4 wheel drive along the Medano Pass Primitive Road. No toilets, water, fire pits, or picnic tables. Pretty much just a bear locker in the woods, which made it ideal! Lots of trees for hammocks, the Medano Creek was nearby. Several water crossings if you drive along far enough, and you can hike up to Medano lake if you feel like a moderate challenge! Of course, the sand dunes were amazing too! We took this trip in June, prior to La Rona. 

Primitive camping

Amazing location, just outside the park. Minimal but great amenities, shower bathrooms, swingset. Views of the park are unmatched.

Great spot!

Perfect location to visit Great Sand Dunes NP, and nice view of the dunes from some of the sites. However, due to COVID they closed down showers and bathrooms and have portable toilets instead. How is this more hygienic I don´t understand...

The dirt road to get to the sites can be a bit bumpy. We were fine on our 4WD, but it must be rough in a normal car.

Great location, no showers, no bathrooms

The campground is fairly easy to find. I arrived after hours and found the signs very helpful. If you plan on visiting the great sand dunes this location is very close to the entrance of the park. The campground was clean and well maintained. 

-If you plan on visiting during the pandemic, the shower facilities are closed to the public.

Great star gazing

Nice campground it would not go back due to the sand in the wind blowing so hard we had sand all in our tent. Very nice place though.

Plenty of spaces when we arrived. Few RV sites that had full hookups and then gravel road to a lot more primitive spots rocky but nice. Great views in the mountains and can see the Great Sand Dunes. Two bars version service. 

Great camping just outside the sand dunes

This RV site was quaint with a fantastic location, but the store and the bathrooms were closed and we never could find the dumpster! Our view was incredible! Make sure to visit the Dunes and Pagosa Falls (2 miles away). 

Accommodating and Friendly Staff

This place is absolutely breathtaking. So many trails and places to trash your new Ford Ranger. The only downside was all the sand. Gets everywhere, if management could try to keep it cleaned next time that would be great. 

So much sand is crazy

Staff is great, several full hook up RV pull through sites, cleans bathrooms and showers.  The view of the Dunes from the RV area is wonderful and only four mile from the entrance to the National Park.  Good rates compared to others in the area.  Zapata Falls is less than 10 miles away, Alamosa is thirty minutes.  The views just driving this area are amazing and Mt Blanca is breathtaking.  

Beautiful views 

We enjoyed the camping trip, and the kids love it. My wife bought the burrito in the restaurant, and the great chili is fantastic; you must try it if you like great New Mexico food.  Only be careful in dune we got bites on legs, which was very bad after a few days later. I never know about it until with my experience.

My kids get a few bits. I got a lot, I think, because I was lying in the sand for a long time to rest after climbing the dunes. Just beware... Likely I used the recommendation in the article, and it works well. I feel much better now..  


Our family camping in Great Sand dunes

As I write this I'm looking out on a spectacular sunset from our spot at Oasis RV campground.  

This is our second night here and as RV parks go it's got all the basics covered. You don't come to this RV camp ground for the amenities you come here for the Dunes.  Which are STUNNING.  

So I recommend coming here if you want a full hookup site that is super close the entrance to the GSDNP.  This is no resort but a great place to setup Basecamp for all those awesome adventures in the park.  

Every thing you need to explore the dunes. 

We backpacked into the dunes for about 90 minutes. First we had to cross a small stream about 30 yards across - 12 to 20 inches deep. There’s nothing like camping on a sand dune - no lights visible as far as you can see. During the night the winds whips up and blows the sand very hard. The Park Rangers estimated the wind gusts reached 30-25 MPH during the night. It was crazy loud. In the morning we had sand everywhere - mouth, nose, inside sleeping bag. Be prepared for  gusts over 15 MPH in the spring.

Better than expected 

This place had what we needed but doesn't really have any amenities. It's best for people who want to go to the national park and you can't beat location for that! Plus you can rent boards for the sand right there. 

The views are lovely, the site had what we needed but the wind was brutal. One night was enough for us! 

Amazing views

It was a good campground, with a variety of options, a dishwashing station, clean bathrooms, and you're able to grab food at the front area to start your day! Everyone was super nice and helpful too.

Good campground!

Where to start. The place looked like a dump when we pulled in so we asked if we could preview the site before paying. Holly said “no” but if we didn’t like it we could come back for a refund. The site was nothing but dirt and there were maybe 3-4 other RV’s there. Despite the park being almost completely empty all the RV’s were right on top of each other. Even though the site was horrible we decided to check out the park before making a final decision. The park was not for us so we asked Holly for a refund. She refused because we “took too long” to make a decision. We made our decision within 20 minutes of our arrival and didn’t use any amenities, other than the dirt road to check out our site. She said that because so many people request refunds she had to limit our decision making time to 5 minutes or less. Do whatever you can to avoid this dust bowl and in particular Holly. I’m not sure what was worse, the site or Holly herself but I’m pretty sure Holly wins the last place prize by a nose. Not that she’s a horse, that would be an insult to horses

The campground is very close to the entrance to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and the campground has a great view of the sand dunes as well.  I give it high praises for having free showers - a must after visiting the sand dunes.  Additionally, it is super dark at night-time...I had to take my dog out at about 1 am to do his business and the view of the stars was phenomenal!  

  

Having said that, the campground is pretty spartan...there isn't much in the way of trees and separation between RV campsites.  But you don't go here for the great campground, you go here because it's super close to the entrance to the Sand Dunes.

Great View of Great Sand Dunes nat'l Park and good location

Stayed in Pinon Flats Campground and has a great site. Don't be surprised if a deer wants to share your site, there are many running around. Clean rest rooms and not far from the Parks entrance.

GREAT SANDS DUNES NATIONAL PARK

We stayed in the RV lot for 1 night. You can rent sand boards and sleds here if the weather is right. There is also a restaurant with food that was better than we expected it to be and a gas station. Bathrooms were fantastic. Showers were some of the best I’ve seen with a private dressing area and hooks/shelves to put your dry clothes on. There is a dishwashing station also. Lots are close together. Super close to the dunes - you get a great view of them from the campground. There’s also a small playground for kids. Staff was super friendly and helpful!

Great campground close to dunes

I was planning to car camp on some public land after a day at Great Sand Dunes. As I was driving out, I passed Oasis’s store and decided to stop for some ice and firewood. As I was driving out to my site for the night, I saw super dark skies and lightening. I checked the forecast and realized it took a turn and I could expect thunderstorms all night. I decided to give them a call 30 minutes before they closed to see if they had any cabins available and they did! The cabins are super primitive and you have to be fully equipped for tent camping. They are only $55 a night which is a steal that close to a National Park. They typically don’t allow dogs in the cabins, but given the forecast let me stay with my sweet pup for an extra $20. They had an awesome view of the dunes and it was a really great night to have a roof over my head. Could not be more grateful to the amazing staff here!

Super Accommodating!

We absolutely loved Sand Dunes Oasis! It was still off season so we did not have running water at the site but we were able to fill up on site when we arrived. The code to the bathroom changes so if you check in after dark, be sure to get a new code the next day! We almost could not take showers as a result! 

Our First Camping Trip of 2022

The Great Sand Dunes Oasis is a great place to camp at a very affordable rate! The facilities were very clean and the campsites were secluded and peaceful. Definitely would camp here again in a heartbeat

Booked a last minute RV spot at Great Sand Dunes Oasis. 

The bad:

The park is not much to look at. The gravel roads and store parking area are in dire need of maintenance; buckle up. There are 20 RV spots all stacked in right on top of each other. The wind was awful and there is nothing to block it. There’s really nothing between the sites but a little strip with a picnic table and small fire ring, and a small tree. 

The good:

The bathrooms and showers were incredibly clean. The person I dealt with on the phone was very accommodating and set us up for after-hours check-in. There was a small playground area near the RV sites. Above the RV sites were cabins and a lodge. They rent Sand sleds to use at the park, $20 each + wax for the day. There is a beautiful view of the dunes from the park. 

The restaurant had not opened yet so I have no opinion of that. The store had just opened and was not fully stocked. 

RV sites were pull-through but it’s pretty tight on your passenger side pulling in. 

All said, I would return to this park again. It is a good place to use as a home base while you explore Great Sand Dunes National Park. Trust me: you will need to shower the sand off. 

Road was horrible getting to spot (huge rocks and potholes).  We only stayed one night and it was extremely windy so we did not get a chance to explore the campground.  Loved being just a stones throw away from the dunes.  Bathrooms were fine.  

Close to the Dunes

Great location but campsites are relatively small. Roads are very bumpy and not easy to get around. Bathrooms and showers are available. If you want to rent sandboards make sure you arrive in time as they step renting them out around 3 pm.

Great location and friendly staff

We stopped in when we missed out on a spot at Zapata Falls earlier in the day. The road is rough coming up and some of the sites aren’t the most level, but there was plenty of space- we drove in and picked whatever looked good as it wasn’t busy when we visited. Showers very clean, drinking water available. Gorgeous view of the dunes at sunset. There is a general store/restaurant on premises for any odds and ends. Most importantly, only about 2 miles from the entrance to the park!

Amazing views 

We grabbed a tent site for our small teardrop for a night and decided to stay 2. Staff was very freindly. Store had essentials including a gas pump. Only a handful of folks in the tent area and it was nice and quiet. fantastic views of the dunes and plenty of shaded sites. Bathroom in the tent sites were clean 

Perfect base camp for the Dunes 

We’ve camped here 4 times.  Twice in tents, once in the cabins and the last time in our RV.  The Great Sand Dune Natl park is one of our favorite places to go.  The camp ground is clean, quiet and the views are amazing.  You can see the milky way at nite and we saw two of the most incredible sunsets imaginable.  Bathrooms are kept clean and the camp store has just everything you could need.  There is a resturant also.  Didn’t eat there so can’t comment on the food.  I’ll go again and again and again.

This campground is so conveniently close to the national park. The property was well-maintained and clean. The staff were very friendly. And, there was a restaurant, gift shop and equipment rental shop on the property.

Our RV spot had full hookups but the sites were so closely spaced that there was no room for a picnic table or outdoor seating. The bathrooms were modern, clean, and with hot showers. 

Excellent Location

We spent one night here so we could go to the park. Nice enough campground with level spaces and full hook ups. We paid $54. Area also has cabins and a lodge as well as a store with a little restaurant. The showers were amazing at this place. Nice hot copious amounts of water and very clean. About 4 miles from the park entrance. Sandunes were pretty cool, but unless you want to hike to the very top of them, you could easily only spend two hours at the most here. ￼

Close to the park but basic campsites 

We booked here last minute on a holiday weekend and we were thankful they had a spot for us! The campground parking area is just that. It’s a place to park for the night, with full hook ups. No wifi. The location can’t be beat! Views are incredible! The bath house was clean. There is a store and restaurant in property. They also have cabins to rent.

My only complaint…this is a dark sky area with expansive views of the sky and the opportunity to see the Milky Way. This is not something g I get to see at home! However, all the giant campers had their bright lights on at night and it really messed with viewing of the sky. I wish there was a rule of no outside lights at night. It’s unnecessary! If you are one of those people that leave your lights on when you go in for the night, please reconsider! 

Great Location 

campsites are w electric and water and sewer hookup. also a dump station.  picnic table and firepit.  lots of room for big rigs. nice showers/toilets and a big sink outside to do dishes. short drive to NP.   pass on restaurant.
